I’ve been growing stuff that blooms indoors to beat the winter blues.I have some baby African violets coming along nicely. Also blessed with south facing windows.
Outside is all grey today and chilly.Lots of birds at the feeder, the only bright color.

^ They don’t come to my house. :(

Your flowers are lovely. Petunias and Christmas cactus. An almost tropical nook there.

Thank you, you can’t really see everything. There is a bench behind the table with plants and cacti in the windows. Not to mention other stuff spread all over the house.
I got the petunias free at the feed store this fall, they were fixing to toss them in the trash along with a flat of pansies.
The lemon grass looks sickly, I overwinter it inside. There is also a calamondon (sp?)orange with small oranges on it.
I grew the bird of paradise from a seed , hopefully it will be big enough to flower soon.

^ Did you ever grow some herbs or something on your porch? Or was it a balcony? We all started somewhere. :D

Lemongrass should overwinter just fine through the south, misslizard. Unless you bring it in to have it fresh for cooking. My lemongrass is huge; almost an invasive pest, but I’ve never been successful using it in cooking.

/\ It will overwinter in the southern part of the state but not here reliably.I use it for making tea, it’s really delicious that way.Add spearmint and chamomile and you have a homemade Celestial Seasonings sleepy time tea for free.
Durning the summer I cut it, dry it ,then braid it to save. Then snip as needed.
The braids make a nice gift for other tea lovers.

Oh, my. 8O

I remember that white stuff. I’m glad you have an indoor space for your plants!

When you braid lemongrass, how much of the “leaf” do you use? Recipes describe using only the inner part of the base.

Add about double the snow in picture and that is what I woke up to and no power.I measured around ten inches of heavy wet stuff. It just came back on.What a mess, broken limbs everywhere, and the pie cherry tree is completely split.Giant limbs fell off the Walnut tree right by the house but none hit the roof.
Since I use lemongrass just for tea I braid the whole leaf.Chop fine and use a tea ball or strainer, delicious!
I have never cooked with it.

I planted some Agapanthus yesterday.
The mucilage in the leaves makes them fire retardant.
Prepping for the Bush fires they're predicting post La Nina.

/\Sedum are nice and juicy and drought resistant, so many kinds to choose from. Some of the tall ones have interesting dried flower tops for indoor bouquets or for winter interest in the garden.

I see the tip of a yellow crocus poking out.
So much clean up work after the wet heavy snow.Broken limbs all over and it took out several fruit trees besides the pie cherry. My son came by and cut up some of the big downed limbs for firewood but the rest will need to be piled up and burned.Wish I had a chipper.
Lots of birds at the feeder, purple finches, goldfinches, juncos, sparrows wrens, chickadee, titmouse, nuthatches, cardinals ,blue jay, mourning dove and one brown thrasher.
I saw three bald eagles circling the other day.
