Have you ever heard of a little something called "supply and demand"?

Plus, we are not talking about "a few vegetarians". Those "few" of several years before have become a quite big group nowadays and lot of people refrain from eating meat these days for varieties of reasons. The number of vegetarians is by no means small anymore and it is not for no reason that practically every restaurant these days has a vegetarian menu (when I started being vegetarian this was not the case and we had to seek a restaurant each time willing to do a veggie plate... these days it is harder to find one without vegetarian menu than to find one with a vegetarian menu. That indicates vegetarians have become a group of people too big to longer ignore)

Besides - it is not about wanting to change the slaughtering industry, well part of it is maybe but it is also about feeling good to yourself and following what you yourself consider morally right. Even if I know that animals continue getting killed for food, the fact that I don't participate in this practice makes me feel good about myself, while I would find it difficult to defend myself eating meat.

I am a vegetarian.
Humans have the duty to protect nature.
Killing animals when such killings are no longer necessary hardly promotes the fulfillment of this duty.

Ovo-lacto-vegetarian here.

Yes, I eat eggs. Yes, I eat dairy. No other "meats". No fish.

Actually, I didn't eat fish for years before I went vegetarian. Something about having pet fish made me re-think the whole "Fish are Food" thing.

I dunno what made me start. I guess I just looked down at my lamb and said to myself, "Nope, I'm not eating this. MOM, GET ME PEANUT BUTTER."

I've been vegetarian for about a year. Wow, it's been that long already? Whatever. It's kind of weird to bring it up in my school, 'cause I'm either afraid that they'll A. Make fun of me, B. Shove meat in my face like they did at my old school, or C. Freak out when they eat meat near me, asking me if it's okay. All of which have happened at some point. Once, I told this guy, and he told me that he would give me some food and it would be meat covered in lettuce and I would admit that it was good. No, dude, I don't like your KFC, get over it.

I have to say that I'm totally okay if people eat meat, go meatless, or other forms of diet.

Have a nice day!

Plus, I like my bacon butties waaaaaaaaay too much.

I don't ever use products tested on animals though. But I think that's practically a given.

I quit eating all meats except for shellfish when I was 17. I never craved it or missed it - I just eat veggie burgers and veggie chicken now.

The only vegitarians at my house are in my stomache!

Seriously, I have tried it. However, with my metabolism, it will not work. I already require five meals a day. No, cutting back is not an option.

Vegitables are the kindling of food in my mind. It is awful difficult to keep a fire going with only kindling. :D

I go through phases - I go veggie after a meltdown, and then a couple of years later will go omnivore after (surprise) a meltdown. I started doing that when I was about ten, but it's hard to be a veggie kid when everyone around you thinks it's unhealthy and "wrong" so I didn't really get into the swing of it until I was in my late 20's.

Always lacto-ovo (give up cheese? NEVER!! !) when I'm off meat. I never eat fish, though - the taste makes me nauseous for days and I get into a near meltdown from fishy smells. I just tell everyone that I'm allergic and that tends to make it a non-problem.

It's not a guilt/belief thing for me - I don't have a problem with meat (I still cook it for guests when I've had them) - but I simply don't want to eat the stuff for extended periods (the longest has been a bit over five years).

It's been interesting to watch as the number of meat analogues has increased over the years - it's really easy to be veg these days if you can afford the substitutes. When I started the options were limited to tofu, tofu and tofu... Explains why I became so interested in cooking though LOL

So... Just out of curiousity to all you veggies.

Is this done because you like animals, or because you hate vegetables?

^Some of us do it because we're opposed to factory farming.
Also, please note that not every veggie on earth is a hippie radical who screams bloody murder every time they see someone eating steak.

Vegetarian since 1995.
Tried doing the vegan thing.
Didn´t do so well.
I´ll try it again someday.
Maybe next year.
That would be cool.
