I went about 30 on a bike, downhill of-course, and my speedometer fell off during that and broke. It was cool, the plastic shattered. The speedometer was cheap and inaccurate, so no big loss.

bicycle: the only bicycle i ever had was a 1970's dragster. i got it in the 80's when i was about 10 (1982). it had 3 gears with a "stick shift" and a "sissy bar" ( i do not know why it was called that) and a banana seat etc.
here is a pic of that type of bike.
Image

that one does not have any gears, but mine had a stick shift mounted on the central bar, half way between the seat and the handlebar stalk.
i found that i could select 1st, and then start to accelerate, then select 3rd and keep constant pressure on the pedals in accelerating, and it would stay in first until i was pedaling rapidly and my power input waned, and only then would it slip into 2nd by itself, it would stay in 2nd until i was pedaling too fast to be able to hold it in second, and then it would slip into third. it was like an automatic in a way. no one else i knew with a dragster found that gear change flaw to exploit.

i liked the fact that i did not need to grab the handle bars tightly and pull my body weight toward them as i accelerated (or rode uphill). i rested my back on the sissy bar which provided support and i pushed my feet into the pedals.
on other bikes i rode, i had to pull my self along, but on the dragster, i pushed myself along with much less effort.

anyway, my dragster had an upholstered pad that fitted over the sissy bar to make it very comfortable on my back. also i had a speedo that went to 50 mph, and blinkers (turn indicators). i had dual headlights, and i had a disk brake on the rear wheel.
i could ride 20 mph with ease, and i got to 35 one day but it was a chore, and it was a peak speed that went for about 1 second before i let off.
i never had a racing bike though because i am not interested in bicycles.

motorbike: probably about 50mph. the only time i rode motorbikes (trail bikes) was to check the fences on our large rural property, and it was mainly rough terrain.

car: i did 260kph (162 mph) in my old 1990 mercedes 560 sel not that long ago.
i was bored one morning during a blackout (electrical) and i decided to check how fast my car would go. i took the video camera and went up the freeway and chose a stretch of super long straight road with a slight sweeping bend at the end of the straight that led to another super long straight.

so i wedged the camera between the dashboard and windscreen (i use a rubber band plugged between the camera plastic and the glass of the windscreen to stabilize and grip it into place). i got the camera ready when i pulled over to the side of the road because i wanted to do a youtube clip called "mercedes 560 sel. the whole story." it was going to show maximum acceleration to top speed, and then i would pluck the camera away from the windscreen and show the speedometer to prove what speed i was doing.

so i waited and waited for there to be no cars going past. i had to have at least 2 minutes of no cars going past to ensure i would not catch and overtake other drivers that would surely report me.

the time came, and i pulled out on to the road, and i clicked the camera to roll, and i floored it and kept it down. as i reached 240 i started to think that it would be a terrible speed for something to go wrong. i wondered then about the speed rating of my tires and whether they could withstand the stress of being spun so fast.
i thought at 250 that i should stop, but i had lots of adrenaline coursing through me, and when the speedo touched 260, i pointed the camera at the speedo, and i thought that even if i could go faster, my speedo would not show it so it is useless to keep going. (lot's of commas in that sentence)

i also was quite unnerved about the speed and i was relieved to take my foot off. things went by so fast, and that slight sweeping bend was hard to take even though i went wide and cut the bend.

so i was happy i got that on my camera and went home.
when i plugged the camera in to watch it, i saw that i had the camera in "photo" mode rather than "video" mode, so all i had was a single shot of the road in front of my car at the point i pressed the button. blast.

I got close to 100 MPH in both a 77 Dodge Maxivan that I owned, and close to that again in a 1992 Olds 88 that I owned. I hit close to 40-45 MPH going downhill on an old Schwinn 10 speed going downhill on a trip to Lewiston Maine from Portland Maine, cars were slowly passing me by at 55MPH.

Thought I should add, fastest I've gone while I was behind the wheel was somewhere around 90...not sure exactly where, since my speedometer only goes up to 80 o_O

But the speed limit on the highway is 70, so 90 doesn't seem so extreme as it might in other places... ¬_¬
