I guess they are 5+ years now. I started off with one braid behind my ear and ended up dreading itself.
the rest is history.

For me dreadlocks are a complete turnoff. They come across as very unappealing and unsanitary. Probably because they remind me of matted fur in pets. Braided hair on the other hand, I generally don't have an issue with.

i can see the matted pet fur association. the unsanitary part is a myth, though...

I had dreads for almost a year, so they were just starting to mature. Mine were down to between my shoulder blades and I could take my bang locks and tie them around the rest of my hair. I mangled mine with fussing over them too much and in a fit cut them off. I regretted doing that shortly after.
I really wish I had taken some pics of them, but due to my dislike of cameras I didn't. I had some people say that they looked good on me. I happened to be wearing a black bandana when I went to the library and rented Pirates of the Caribbean. The desk clerk said that I looked a lot like Jack Sparrow.
I found out that babies really like dreadlocks. They love pulling on them.

LOL they weren't officially dreads at 3-4 months. it takes a while for them to mature and look the way they do now. that's funny, though. i find it interesting what people consider to be "bad" looking. no offense taken btw.

Yeah, I got into a bit of a debate about this yesterday.

I was hanging out with a few friends, and happened to be sitting across the table from a friend of mine who happens to have fairly long hair. Just on impulse, I asked him if he'd ever considered dreading up. We then got into a discussion of how one gets dreads in the first place, and people were tossing out, "Oh, just don't wash or brush your hair anymore, and you'll get dreads." :?

So I was compelled to toss out the basics of sectioning off and back combing. But still the theory of just don't wash or brush your hair = dreads was persisting. :x I think I eventually managed to kill the notion by satirically arguing that one can also get a good tan by just not washing their skin anymore.

Good fortune,

No more dreads to be seen on me but the nearest I have had to dreads in the past is long curly hair that tangles a lot and drove me bonkers. I just appreciate them now on other people and I do not have the maintainance hang up for them.

you can do tons with dreads..wear them down, wear them up in wraps, braid them, wear them in big buns, slap a tam on your head..from what i can see, those are braids in the pic. 8)
