If aliens come and if they are hostile, we will need to know how to defend ourselves.

Watch this movie to see how to survive an alien attack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrRCR0iOMr0&feature=user

However, even the probability of kill for saturation bombing isn't 100% as evidenced in Vietnam.

That is because they didn't use hydrogenbombs in Vietnam... and that is just the most destructive weapon we humans have invented, imagine what kind of weapons an alien species apparently capable of traveling lightyears through the universe might have.

It is as Stephen Hawkin says, we might wanna keep our heads down, because if they are out there and have a way to reach us, they very well might!

I don't think they would just stop in to say 'hi'. They would probably be interested in our minerals, water, etc...

But why in the name of Newton would they want to grab resources that are down at the bottom of a heavy gravity well, covered by this pesky thick atmosphere, when they could just as easily mine all the minerals they want from asteroids, or the moons of Jupiter and Saturn? As for water, there's plenty of that in the Martian icecaps, and the gravity well is much shallower there. (That's assuming they drink or breathe water, of course - if they prefer it with methane and such, Jupiter's moon Europa and Saturn's moon Enceladus are much likelier candidates.)

Slave labor? To quote Louis Wu in The Ringworld Engineers, "Humans and kzinti, we make poor slaves."

No, the only sane reason I can come up with to cross interstellar space to visit this rather unremarkable little orb is in order to say "hi" in person. And if the alien race in question isn't at all curious, they're unlikely to go to all that trouble. After all, there would appear to be countless systems in the area without probable inhabitants, from which they could acquire resources to their hearts' content without having to worry about trouble from the natives.

Eek, missconstrue, you must be American. :P

I wish all Canadians could speak the two official languages. :(

According to current estimates there should be around 2.3 civilizations to talk to. Of course we just need to keep funding SETI in order to find them... Why not? The problem here is that it would be appeal to ignorance to say there's no life based on current data, however this is an endless cycle because lack of proof doesn't mean falsity, it just makes belief in ET non-falsifiable. Provable if there was a documented contact, but non-disprovable otherwise.

I agree. That's one problem with our scientific culture. Only if it's in front of you, is it real.

We're now approaching Earth.

Keep all your appendanges inside the craft.

Humans are quite aggressive, and have been to attack without provocation.

Note their primitive technology, based primarily on petroleum distalates.

Oh, we're in luck ! ! There's a human now. We'll pause here for a moment to observe it's reaction.
Rather disappointing, its merely staring at our craft. I was hoping it would try to signal to us in some way.

Well, moving right along ....

They would land in my front yard, knock on the door and when I answered, they would say, "Sorry we're late. Get in, buckle up, shut up and hang on for the ride."

they'd want to take over our planet. its probably one of the best ones to live on in the universe, that is if they could survive the atmosphere and be able to breath here
