But why do we hunt seals now? I mean we have everything we need. I know some ppl out there still hunt them for food and survival.
The main reason for the hunt in income, especially to the folks in Newfoundland. When the the cod fishery closed (I was 12 at the time), most of the income to families stopped (my family included). Some got jobs elsewhere but the seal hunt generates a lot of money for those who still live in the outport communities.
People think we just hunt them for their pelts, but seal is never waisted. We sell and eat the meat, we even use the flippers for pie (I don't really like the taste though). Just about everytime a boat comes into shore people gather just to get first pick in meat and flippers.

I just don't understand why ppl in particular hunt for the fun of it. Even the idea of collecting heads from "wild game" freaks me out.
We hunt because we need to, wild meat is much healthier then the manufactured stuff, but we manage to have some fun. The sad thing is tourists who come on a hunting trips only want to kill something, just for sport, and that makes me mad. When we kill a moose, there is nothing left when we are done, the meat can last for a full year, so it's one moose per family per year.
