A clothing store employee thought I was high on drugs 10 years ago when I was just getting out on my own, and maybe I wasn't quite ready to handle the whole emphasis on appearance thing for socializing. Suits seemed pretentious and nothing felt right about departing from my usual clothing for any purpose. Since then I've expanded my horizons to clothing that fits in a professional setting, but I still hate ties and don't wear them.

I was probably less highly functioning then, and maybe the stress of moving out for the first time was also having an effect. Back then I had what I now recognize as frequent meltdowns and getting tired just from being around other people. I'm sure this must have cost me the formation of long term contacts.

Someone also called me ret*d last summer. This really made me uncomfortable, and I just froze. I didn't know how to respond. I know I'm not ret*d. I am deficient in some ways, but I have also done some things that make me unique. I know that some people will be impossible to please no matter what I achieve.

I have been called retaredede since I was 7 AFAIK. Then I moved to Montana and very few kids asked me if I'm ret*d. I always took it offensivly because I thought I was doing something abnormal. It could have been my body posture or how I was walking or maybe me walking against the lockers in the hallway or running my fringers along them as I go by. But now I don't take it personal anymore. It's just a curious question.

I still get called it occasionally by as*holes but that doesn't matter. They're just dickheads. So what if I am literal or gullible or different. That's doesn't make me stupid or less intelligent. Sure I do stupid things but doesn't everyone.

"special" is worse than "ret*d" in my opinion.

The tawdry tard label

My experience with the term 'ret*d' is that only a person with low self esteem would call someone by that name.

My ex-husband started referring to me by this label, and my son followed suit. Of course I do not believe that anyone deserves this designation. The term is not used scientifically and is meant to hurt someone emotionally. It is abusive, bullying, and therefore unacceptable, like racial, ethnic and sexual slurs.

Yeah I've been called that, even if its in a joking matter I get a little pissed off inside, rarely letting that anger out though.

But I hate to admit this, but I've accidently slipped this word a few times at things in the past. But I really don't want to, its a bad word and I'll never call another person that.

I'm careful not to use that word, because I don't care for it.

ret*d is a word best used to describe the Mundies.... the Neurotypicals. Afterall, they can't get their heads out of their friends' collective butts long enough to do any thinking.

THAT is why we will rule the world some day, and their last dying remnants will be huddled together, gradually going insane from having a less than grossly excessive number of associates left... wondering where they went wrong...

:lmao:

From Radiohead:
I want you to notice
when I'm not around
You're so very SPPPeshhal
I wish I was SPPPeshhal

Or perhaps: Thepppeshhal
I think I would prefer to be called ret*d than Special. I call myself ret*d at times. I rarely call myself special. In fact, I never call myself special. I think "Special" is more condescending than ret*d. I think they should change the name of the "Special Olympics" to something more dignified. Maybe "Challenged Olympics" or "Olympiad of the Challenged" and not make the events separate from the events of the regular olympics. Different but not separate. Everyone, challenged and non-challenged, should go to China in 2008 and compete in the same Olympics at different and appropriate levels. IMO
