I've meet....

Anfernee Hardaway- He attended the same church I was a member of. I also went to school with two of his cousins.

Willard Pugh (Harpo in "Color Purple") My high school was his alma mata and he attended our school's gospel choir party to see our teacher who taught him.

Spud Webb(NBA's shortest player)- Came to a school assembly.

Willie Herenton (Mayor, Memphis TN) He was on my college's campus campaining.

My grandfather went to high school with Isaac Hayes.

My mother went into Camio's dressing room because she knew one of them and met a football player from the Cincinnatti Bengals and John Mellencamp at the Mercedes Benz dealership where she works.

I walked past John Flansburgh, of They Might Be Giants, after a concert. I actually had enough sense to say "Hey Sir, Great Show". Probably didn't even hear me though.

Later I learned that he was going to the merchandise table to interact with fans... and I am sure to spur sales. Too bad I had to leave so I could get home at a resonable hour... ugh.

I don't really travel to places where Famous people congregate... so I don't see any. I always want to meet them and just congratulate them personally on making something that I enjoy... not gushing or anything... just say "hey man, you do good work".

...in all fairness, who cares?

good people should be left to their own devices and should not bask in the glory and celebrity nonsense that takes place these days. some people are treated like gods... they should be humbled.

I worked in college radio and met a few famous people as they were passing through, back in the 60's.

I met Jackson Browne (singer) when he was going to perform at the gym. I didn't like him. He came off surprisingly obnoxious. There was a singing group named Cashman and West. Tommy West's real last name was Picardo. His brother worked at the station. I met tommy a few times. I met Sonny Fox, who hosted kids' televsion shows in the 50's, while covering a rally for Soviet Jewery in New York. I met 60's protest singer Phil Ochs at a rally and Pete Seeger at a concert.

More recently (early 80's) I met Mother Theresa when she opened a convent in Newark, NJ. I was briefly interviewed on the local television news afterwards.

Oh yeah, and I once met 50's icon Arthur Godfrey as he was walking up the steps of the gym to a state lottery drawing. A group of us 60's freaks were sitting on the steps. He picked up one of the guitars, played a few chords, quite well, and chatted pleasantly. We were impressed by what a nice guy he was.

Bob Greene, former columnist for the Chicago Tribune. He autographed one of his books for me when I was twelve, and we later corresponded through emails. He was absolutely lovely and I really miss his column.

Stephen King, Maria Shriver ( I sent a gift to Martina Navratilova for her), Jacqueline (dont know last name, wrote popular novels), Les Feinberg, Paul of Peter Paul & Mary (who kissed the top of my head and I didn't mind!), the guy who played the obnoxious lawyer on Night Court (complaining about the weather at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade), two whose names I can't reveal because they were psychiatric patients, Ben Vereen, Kate Bornstein. There was Ben Bova - a sci-fi writer I shared a cab with. Because of prosopagnosia I have met a lot of famous people I don't remember. There was a guy who was a famous musician, and others I can't remember. I met a lot of these people while I was working at the Doubleday flagship store in New York City. Paul I met while doing phones for a telethon, Kate Bornstein and Les Feinberg at conferences. There probably are others but I just can't remember their names right now. It never had the impact on me that it has on others so I think that's why I don't remember them all.
Stephen King walked around the bookstore with a walkman and a huge cowboy hat and me and the other clerks were snickering, and more so when he walked up to the counter and said in a nasal voice, "Do you take credit cards here?" A few feet from his face was a sign with all the credit cards the store accepted. He signed his name but we were doubtful. He had his books sent which is how I confirmed his identity. He had them sent to Bangor, Maine.
