I also believe there might be some truth to it. Dragons figure in quite a few unrelated cultures around the world, so they could've simply been a mishmash of a pterodactyl and something that lights up, like a firefly.

I have quite a few. One of them is I'll be walking on the sidewalk one day and a car suddenly flies off the road and pins me to a post.
