Why do nurses in the U.S. always refer to themselves as "registered nurses"?

Because it implies a certain amount of schooling and the possession of a particular license, which not all nurses have. For instance, you can be an LPN, a licensed practical nurse, which doesn't require as much schooling as becoming an RN
