Pennies taste like blood. Blood came first, then pennies, so blood could not have been intended to taste like something that wasn't even invented.

But blood is not an animate creature - it is without the capablility to think for itself, or feel. It could not have felt lonely.
Maybe the inventor of pennies liked the taste of blood but didn't like hurting himself (or herself, whatever). This way, he could always taste blood but didn't have to endure pain. It's possible.

Hmm... somewhat more likely than my idea. And yet, I rather liked the mental image of lonely blood cells. My brain deals far better with fantasy and abstraction than realism. Damn you, attention span...
