Awww, thanks, Britte----you're so sweet! My sister died, and I haven't quite gotten a grip, yet. Thanks, for asking!

Also, DOS 3.0?? LOL

Zork was the most popular one ("You are standing in an open field...") but here's a list of others:

Also, the DOS command line experience is alive and well among Linux enthusiasts!

Thanks, so much, for responding----I think it WAS "Zork"! ! I just loved those old DOS text games!! There was an episode of "The Big Bang Theory" with Sheldon playing it, and I was so envious!

- Candy cigarettes that sorta promised to make pretend smoke but didn't.

- Playground equipment that wasn't made of thick, child safe round edged plastic. Scorching-hot long flat metal slides, merry-go-rounds that broke ankles and swings with chains longer than six feet so you could really get some air when you flew off.

- Rollerball-dispersed deodorants.....

Awww, I remember ALL of these things, so FONDLY!!

I especially liked the old "real" playground equipment! We never killed OURSELVES----I don't see what the problem is----everybody's so friggin' coddled, nowadays! SHEESH!!

I remember another PSA from when I was a kid that was anti-smoking. It was a cartoon about two friendly spacemen who are planning to visit Earth, thinking it's a nice planet, but when they see people on the planet smoking -one of them is even a lady pushing a baby carriage!- and learn about how smoking is harmful and causes cancer, they decide Earth isn't so nice after all and leave.

Of course, they had to be friendly aliens who just want to visit Earth or it would be like smoking saved the human race from certain doom.

Anyway, one of the aliens only said one phrase to the other: "I agree, Smedley". This became quite a popular household phrase for a while if someone said anything you agreed with. But if you said it now, people would probably think *you* were from outer space. :alien:

Oh, that's not really a material thing, is it. Well someone else mentioned Mr. Yuk, so...

No, I was in the Navy. I worked my way up from Keypunch Operator, to Computer Operations, to Engineer, to Director of the Training Department.

Okay, not really a "material thing", I guess, but.....

Who remembers "The Twist", "The Mash Potato", or "The Swim"? Did you ever DO them----or, just remember hearing about them on the TV, or whatever?

Those are "dances"...right? Waaaay too social for me when I was younger (still are). Also, way before my time, I think they were released in the late 50's-early 60's?

[color=#9932CC][b]Oh, I just thought of another one.....

Does anybody remember when you could just walk down the street (so-to-speak), and get a JOB? Like, you could just go to the gas station, on the corner----or, the corner drug-store----and get a job as a gas-pump-jockey; or, as a soda jerk, at the fountain?

Yeah...well I live out in the country, so I never would have been able to walk TO a place to get a job, but I remember when you could walk IN to a place and just talk to the manager. And they could size a person up pretty quickly just by talking to them. Filling out an application was just a formality. If a person seemed like they had reasonably good sense, they were hired, simple as that.

Now most places won't even talk to walk-ins. You either submit a resume online, and/or fill out a long application, and agree to a background check, and maybe even have to take some tests before they will even consider talking to you.

Reminds me of something else. Doctors used to really do a physical examination. On every visit they would listen to your heart and your breathing, look in your eyes and ears and mouth, check your fingernails, etc. It was all part of the exam.

Now they won't even do anything to physically examine you unless you specifically say you want them to check something. If they do anything to look at it, they may bill for it like it's a separate visit! And even then they barely do anything to check it out. They would rather run expensive tests than to actually look at anything for themselves.

Seems like people don't want to use their own judgment about things anymore, they would rather rely on computers and data and a system of tests to tell them the answer.

I can only do the Twist--but I like watching those 50s-60s dances.

Noooo...

But I *can* moonwalk and do most of the moves from 'Thriller' while wearing Derby skates! My talents are wasted on shoes. That, and I trip and fall a lot without wheels under my feet.

Starting handles on cars, so start the engine by hand when the battery was flat.

Edit:- Oops, I see Aunt Blabby already said this on the previous page!, have to think of something else quick.

How about paraffin heaters?, before central heating, had to go to the hardware store to buy a gallon of paraffin to use in a little stand alone heater. And winters where cold in those days, no double glazing either.
