What's the Amish thing?

It's a booklet that was published originally in 1959. Lots of photographs, and information about their way of life back then. Basically looks pretty idyllic.

Very cool! I love old books. The way they look, the way they feel, their smell, and the things in them. I'm very curious what that one says about the Amish during that time.

It's my understanding that it would look essentially identical today - almost seems tempting sometimes, but my distaste for facial hair is probably a deal-breaker though...

It often seems very tempting to me. I'm not a great fan of the modern world.

It seems that the Americans of the time didn't know very much about them, because it talks about people thinking how strange they are, and how quaint. Which is odd, because the 50s now seem quite quaint to me. I guess every age looks back at more simpler times with some nostalgia.

I'm right there with you. I just couldn't devote myself to their religious ideals. If there was a community that lived that way without religious rule, I'd so be there.

And... I like beards. ^_^

I'm not surprised by that, actually. I think it's only been fairly recent that Americans have actually taken the time to understand the Amish. I watched a 70s documentary on the topic not too long ago, and laughed about the inaccuracies. hehe

Grisha, progress does happen within the Amish communities, but it takes a while and the progression has to jive with their way of life. Essentially... not change their core way of life.

First thing I save up for when I get a job is this. It's SO PRETTY.

That's a really cool thing to devote yourself too. Both the buying of the instrument and the music itself.

Wodka and flowahs.

While I'm not fond of vodka, I do love the flowers.
