He was schizophrenic, that picture is his art work going through the stages of his mental illness.

It's meant to flow top left, top right, bottom right, bottom left.

Yes, I looked him up and found the references to schizophrenia.
That's very interesting, considering the accuracy of the patterns and how they developed along with the schizophrenia. I don't think I've ever seen them so well done.
