How someone with a British last name could sound so German. Mind you, there is a little bit of German on my dad's side. I guess you could say that I'm a real German Canadian even though I have a British last name. My sister gets asked if she's French Canadian, so I guess I'm not the only member of my original family to have an accent.

My sister always reminded me of Lebeau.

People's accents aren't connected to their ancestry, they're connected to their surroundings when they were learning the language. That's why people with foreign ancestry have kids and grandkids who speak with the local accent instead of sounding like their grandparents who learned English as a second language.

The sounds we can make when speaking aren't limited to the ones our ancestors used.

There's a condition called Foreign Accent Syndrome, where the foreign accent is 'natural' and the person exhibiting it is aware they sound 'off' and not intending to affect a foreign accent.

There's also learned accents, like Transatlantic English typical of actors during the early to mid 20th century.

There were two German families that my family knew. One lived three houses down from us - Hans, Debbie and their little son, Steven. The other one was Pete, Debbie and their son, Chris. They lived in Alberta and Pete and his son, Chris came to visit every Summer. I also wonder if I have Foreign Accent Syndrome.
