French, Scottish, English and Native American. My line goes back to French Royalty who were allowed to immigrate to Scotland but only if they marry their Scottish Queens and Princesses. My father and grandfather were also members of the Freemason.

Europeans don't tend to do that so much. Interesting...

Well, my parents were Irish, but I suppose I could go back a few generations and mix things up a bit if anyone was interested. :? What's wrong with just being American?

I think it’s because in most countries ethnicity and nationality are closely tied—at least traditionally.

That's not the case with America.

There are less than 3 million native Americans left and only another 10 million people that are ¼ or more…

So, out of a country of 300 million, less than 3% could legitimately claim American as a nationality and an ethnicity.

Nearly everyone in America is from somewhere else (within a generation or three).

PS

Besides, America's only been a nation for 234 years...

I'm American. My ancestry includes most of Northern Europe. Good lord, my ancestors slept around.

I'm Norwegian. Though not particularly proud about it. Most Norwegians are highly capitalistic, self centered, short sighted and intolerant. It's comical, but many Norwegians run around and yap about democracy, freedom of speech and how bad our current government is at doing their job - almost as if they understood what the heck they are on about.

Norway is a soap bubble society as coined by me. It basically means that the generality of Norwegians have no clue about what's going on outside of the safe borders of their gardens.

My opinion is that we tend to think that being American is just plain boring. We like to spice things up by stating our ancestral connections to other countries to seem more "exotic".

That being said, I'm a plain ol' boring, pasty-white American. (and to spice it up - I've got 75% German and 25% Native American [Arapaho] roots)
