Thanks all_white,I hope that helps to explain to anyone who's still not sure.At first I thought the OP was referring to England proper, but the mention of 'Brits' indicated the confusion that many people around the world share.

Something to add is that the full name of the UK is actually :
The United Kingdom (of Great Britain) and Northern Ireland. 'United Kingdom' is a shortened form of this.
The 'Kingdom' in question was created by the union of the crowns of England and Scotland, along with the principality of Wales.
For many years I also thought the 'United' part meant the inclusion of Northern Ireland, but it actually refers to the Kingdoms of England and Scotland. The inclusion is NI is covered by the word 'and' !

Can't Americans learn to get this right? They are constantly referring to "English" and "British" people as though they were the same thing. Yes, all English people are British, but not all British people are English.

Britain = England, Scotland, and Wales. Thus, "British" people are not exclusively English. They can be Scottish or Welsh.

The UK = Britain + Northern Ireland.

It's time for that amazingly brilliant, mega-fast video again:

This is one of my pet hates too! I don't think this is just an American problem though. Almost everyone I meet from outside the UK thinks that Britain = England.

I like the fact that the video has Wales coloured white. Probably due to all our lovely clouds. Apparently in the planned updated video, Wales will be coloured red. Probably due to our obsession with dragons. 8)

Some English people have an obsession with dragons too. Personally, I would like to see this flag as the official flag of England:

Check and mate! I've also got bejeweled fake nails! They're so glamorous. :D

I bet you also live in a fancy loft apartment in New York City even though you don't actually have a job. 8)

One of the reasons for 'correctness' (not of the political variety) being sought is that English people themselves have, quite rightly, begun to realise that their own nationality is being overlooked in the confusion of allowing the interchangeability between Britain/England.

There is a difference between pedantry and simply wanting to be accurate for good reasons.

I agree. My mother is Scottish, and she gets deeply annoyed when people use the term Britain for England, or even worse when she hears people use the term England to include Scotland.

I'd like to see an English Parliament, on a par with the Scottish, so we can be united, but also have a fairer system.

Of course, with the EU, neither England nor Scotland has a huge amount of autonomy regardless of our individual Parliamentary situation.

By English people, yes, to an extent. But not to such an extent by British people...
