Your and you're and pronounced exactly the same so it is easy to get them mixed up.
If it was not for spell check I could not post on these forums at all. Don't you think that this thread is a bit elitist?
It makes people who are not grammar geniuses feel stupid.

We're just the second spell check. If correcting people makes us elitist then I can't imagine what your opinion is on teachers. Feeling stupid for not being a "grammar genius" just means you do actually care about it and if it makes you feel that bad then maybe it's time to start improving.

I learned spelling and grammar in school years ago. I would write very good papers that deserved an A and my grade would be marked down to a C because of that damned grammar.
Some people may be dyslexic or have other learning disabilities. I had trouble learning to read and spelling and grammar were nearly impossible for me.
While people that make grammar mistakes annoy you Grammar Nazis offend me.

Some of the best things about typing on the internet are the easily accessible online dictionaries and the lack of a time constraint. If someone can't be bothered to look a word up if they're not sure how it's spelled or if they feel they have to rush then that person can expect to be corrected on any mistakes.
My grammar is not that bad. I get annoyed with some mistakes but not punctuation mistakes like Your and You're.
I can speak and write proper English but when it comes to perfect punctuation and spelling I have difficulty. I may have over-exaggerated my last post a bit because making grammar mistakes is very common.
Occasionally correcting people does not make you elitist but correcting every single spelling mistake would.
I don't have a negative opinion of teachers but I do have a negative opinion of the education system.
The use of proper English is probably more important to a person that learned English as a second language. I would imagine that mistakes would be very confusing for them.
I have never given much thought to every single rule but I try to speak properly.
The reason why you and you're are such common mistakes is because they are homonyms. When a word has similar spelling and the same pronunciation it is easier to make a mistake.
Compared to english slang and text abbreviations this is not annoying at all. They invent new and idiotic slang each day. That annoys me greatly!
