I, too, find them annoyingly popular. But I like tattoos and piercings, although only if I think they look good on someone.
I myself have had 3 piercings and 1 dermal punch (circular scalpel used for biopsies - in piercing, it is used to remove a chunk of flesh, usually cartilage, to make room for a large piece of jewelry without needing to stretch).
I had an industrial (now retired), which is two piercings on the helix of the ear connected by a bar. Was pierced at 14g, kept it for about 2.5 years before retiring it.
Still have my conch dermal punch - right in the center of the ear pretty much, 8g.
Septum - pierced it at 12g, stretched almost up to 1/2". I haven't worn anything in it for over a year, but the hole still exists and has stayed between 8g and 6g for a while now. I doubt it will shrink any more. I may stretch it again in the future - I only stopped because of how painful denting my septum cartilage was. I had been denting it from 4g upwards... so that's a lot of constant pain, especially as it neared 1/2".
Taking that jewelry out and leaving it out was greater relief than literally any physical sensation I've had in my life. The skin felt perfectly fine, there was nothing wrong with the piercing skin itself. It's just the cartilage denting... ugh.
I'd love to have more piercings, though, I just wish there was less of a social stigma against them, or fewer idiots getting them and doing everything all wrong.
