It's the publicity. Plain and simple. Who made the movies about the South? They are the ones dictating how their half interprets the accent. With Atlanta, you can re-create the disturbing caricature into a more accurate representation. It's largely from ignorance. It's the same way the French are appalled by the Quebecois accent (dialect at this point).
