I guess from my perspective, the greatest fashion statement in the middle ages were the Polish hussars.

These knights wore suits of armor with wings. The wings were made using actual feathers. They were practical and were highly effective in its day.
I remember reading the book "Poland" by James A. Mitchener where this type of armor was used. The Poles were up against a vast army many times their size. These Polish knights took to the field and attacked this vast superior army. As they approached the feathers made a deafening roar. It sounded like a massive calvary charge was coming. The frightened enemy looked for the source and then over the hilltop angels began to descent from the hills. The enemy fled in a total route believing a heavenly army would spell their immediate doom.
