That's one of those either or questions where the answer is ... Yes!

I get my continuous running fix at our little county seat farm burg's model railroad club & get my small shelf layout fix at home.

I haven't put any overall photos of club layout online but here's my part of our modular HO scale layout,
16 feet long and 30 inches wide, which for our metric friends is about 4.8m long and 76cm wide.
Progress is very slow with the mess my health is but there aren't enough people who do this kind of thing in our area for there to be someone in club who doesn't already have their own thing going.

I'm trying to give it areas with interesting views such as these, obviously still in progress,

Because I have been using up my limited energy on the club layout my little shelf layout at home is still only this far along after a decade,

I also enjoy tinkering with the large scale, "garden railway" trains.
My upper floor apartment doesn't have much of a garden, so it is necessary to go run at a friend's house.
Or set up temporary track in my living room or on the balcony.

Here's one before and after I decided to make it more to my liking,

I also like small electric industrial and tram locos.
Eventually it will be able to run off live catenary trolley wire,

One of my favorite parts of model railroading, in UK railway modeling, is taking basic models and adding details, in the case of Bachmann's "Big Hauler" locomotives they kept the price down by omitting some necessary mechanical and structural details on the real ones which are not necessary on the models. I also added the class lamp visible on edge of smokebox.

Also, never underestimate the value of model trains as cat toys,
:D

This is a prototype creation it would be fun to scratchbuild a model of but I most likely never will,
