Looking back over some (not all) of the replies it appears to be come confusion over weapons and their role in self defense. Some are on the right track.
Carrying a handgun does not invite an occasion to use it any more than wearing a seatbelt in a car invites and accident.
Those who have a carry permit are usually always required by state law to have it concealed at ALL TIMES. To do otherwise is called brandishing and that can get you a trip to jail and/or the loss of the carry permit.
Bragging about the fact that you are "packing" or purposely getting into altercations where the use of said handgun will be needed is a criminal and civil liability nightmare.
Best to avoid the bad parts of town if at all possible because that has the appearance of looking for trouble.
Having to defend yourself with deadly force it nothing to be taken lightly. A decision to shoot someone will have to be made in seconds but the lawyers and jury will have hours, days, weeks, or longer to dissect that decision. Your fate will be in their hands then so it’s really better to be damned careful about your conduct while carrying.

The theory that only women need to be armed. I didn’t know that men are made of kevlar and steel. We might want to see ourselves that way but in the real world things are different. There’s always someone bigger and badder or several that aren’t but there’s strength in numbers. My head might be hard but it’s not bulletproof and it can still be bashed in with a tire iron.

Then there’s the belief that carrying a weapon for self defense makes us as wrong as those we are defending ourselves against. WTF does that mean?
Let me explain the difference. They, the bad guys, are armed for the purpose of doing bad things to YOU. Violating your rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and all that.
YOUR purpose for being armed is to protect yourself against THEM. They’re still going to be there hunting you whether you’re armed or not. Not being armed makes you easy prey.
Does that simplify it enough?

As I said above, there are complications with being armed. Using discretion is not just a good idea it’s a must.

I could go on and on about this, but…………..

There was no point to put it bluntly.

I don't carry any weapons. Honest. But I'll tell you what intrigues me. There's a story about Peter, one of Jesus' apostles. And when the Roman soldiers come to take Jesus away, Peter supposedly pulls out his sword and cuts the ear of one of them. Jesus tells him to put away his sword. What I find curious is why did Peter have a sword to begin with. He was a fisherman. I'm asking this from a purely historical stance. Anyone know about this? Did Jews in those days walk around carrying swords?

I am in the catering business, which means i have to go to private residences too. A small statured woman can be tough, but lots of people are a lot bigger and stronger. I plan to get a concealed carry permit just in case. I also live in 'Nompton', which is the east side of Norman. We have had crack dealer problems, not to mention the guy down the block who likes to expose himself on his porch.... did i mention he lives a hundred feet from a daycare? Yes, the cops are taking care of it. I just walk to work a lot and cant always get an escort. My boss has no problem with it as long as i adhere to carrier guidelines.

Icarus_falling, some people don't carry weapons because THE PERSON CARRYING THE WEAPON is more likely to be arrested than the attacker, merely for CARRYING a weapon. OK?

Really? It's illegal to be equipped to defend yourself in the UK? You're more afraid of your local authorities than violent criminals? Why, I had no idea!

But it could be worse. In communist China, you could be arrested for looking at the wrong thing on the internet.

Good fortune,

Sadly, its true. Self-defense in the UK is an incredibly fraught area, with increasingly unclear rules as to what constitutes reasonable force, and self-defence. The victim is not a victim, but another suspect.

Me, I rely on wearing a large number of chunky rings. Adds that little extra edge to a blow, and has even on occasion "signed my work". (My brother spent a fortnight with my first initial stamped on his head, after a fracas. NO, I dont wear intitalled rings, it was pure chance, and mildly amusing.)

That and application of the two laws of street fighting. 1) Hit them as hard as you can, as soon as you can, with the greatest effect that you can, aiming to floor 2) f**k off sharpish before they get up.

(Not that I ever remember those sacred laws.. i have a terrible sense of personal danger.)

I work in construction an have a lot of tools in my truck that would qualify as weapons and I always have at least one knife but I never think of it as carrying weapons just tools. Besides almost anything can be a weapon you just have to be creative

I really should start carrying stuff again; I got out of the habit and that could get me killed, you never know. :) I never really carried anything really even before... I carried knives and a can of pepper spray that was meant for dogs but would work on humans, but the thing is, I had to have that can of spray everywhere and once I had no place to hide it but inside my sock and shoe under my baggy pants... but it fell out and I lost it. :( I've made plastic and wooden knives to take on planes, but never did so because what was the point? I could just use the sharp edge of a magazine or roll up the stiff, laminated safety-procedure-explanation card... however, knives are the best for just everyday life, and sometimes you need a knife to cut stuff anyway... and pepper spray, preferably with marking dye in it, that shoots really far, is also necessary IMO... never could find any tho. I need no weapons, I have very healthy and strong teeth. If someone starts messing with me I'll bite him in the throat repeatedly until he surrenders or stops struggling

Seriously speaking; I don't feel any need to protect myself. If I'm in trouble I'll just run like the heck.

I keep a gun near my bed, and always have a decent hunting knife on me. I'm glad I live in a state where self-defense is still legal 8O

Your stupid gun laws are the only reason I don't move to Europe somewhere. Anyone know what Finland's laws are like? :P

Be sure to (discretely) check your local laws about caring weapons (concealed and otherwise). I used to carry a collapsible baton until I discovered that they are illegal in the state I am living in. A few places even require a permit to carry pepper spray.

I carry a curry-spray to spray on my burgers.

Dude, Ohio is not the crime capital of the the world by a long stretch. Maybe there are some bad areas around you, but go to East St. Louis, Newark, Miami or Washington DC if you want to see America's crime hot spots. The US has more violent crime than most western industrial countries, but there are places in the 3rd world that make the US seem pretty safe - Haiti, Nigeria, and Papua New Guinea come to mind. And Mexico City and Columbia have major industries built around kidnapping people for ransom. The rich have hardened themselves with protection, so now the kidnappers target middle and working class people.

I'm not opposed to self-defense and I own a few tools that are designed for protection. But most Americans have an inflated fear of crime, and it is directly linked to the yellow press. If it bleeds, it leads!

I carry a small pocket knife. It is more for utility than for self defense.

My dad wants me and him to take a concealed weapons course together so we can carry small handguns, but he's crazy.

A few years back I used to carry a knife with me inside of my hand bag. It was purely for protection.
My mother found it one day while snooping through my handbag so I don't carry one anymore.

My kickboxing teacher told me that if you kick someone in the knee from the front, you can (if you kick with enough force, i.e. straight on) dislocate the knee, or at least cause immense pain.
