I havent read the entire thread, but im dissapointed to see mostly sci-fi responses.
What about purported REAL aliens, Pleiadians, Procyonians, Zeta Reticulans, Dracos etc...
Because the ones in science fiction are more realistic (well, except maybe the Klingons - a society that maintains a barbarian lifestyle is unlikely to cooperate well enough to build starships. One novel claimed that Klingons were originally a slave race of another starfaring species, and wound up killing their masters and seizing their technology, but that never became canon until it was used to explain away the Kazon in
Star Trek: Voyager).
I mean, really - can you come up with any rational explanation why a purportedly intelligent alien species would spend the time, effort, and expense of crossing lightyears of space (sometimes hundreds of lightyears - the Pleiades cluster of stars, all less than 100 million years old, is around 440 lightyears away) to a planet orbiting a star that many of them would consider unsuitable for life (Procyon A, for example, is an F-class star, hotter than our Sun, while its binary companion, Procyon B, is a white dwarf) - and then spend their time on arrival playing with our wheat crops and sticking needles into peoples' brains (a maneuver unlikely to elicit any information whatsoever)?
I'm sorry, but I prefer my intelligent alien life forms to act in a fashion that could be described as, well,
intelligent.
