In New York City, it became mandatory for there to be rubberized floors in play areas about the time I was 10 years old. That was in 1971.

Before then, if a kid fell of the swings, he/she would fall onto concrete/cement.

Do you remember a time when you did not carry a phone?

Wow. Yes they also have the version of filling the play area with sand/gravel here or chopped wood pieces instead of rubber

I never had a rubber flooring at any playscape. I've never seen that. My playground near my house was just hard, dry ground and dead grass. My school one where I broke my wrist was in an area with little rocks in it, rocks about as big as ... full sized erasers? They were quite big and heavy. The kids threw them sometimes. It hurt. :( That's the playground where I figured out what sex was. Someone wrote "Go screw a moose" on the climber in magic marker. Somehow, I just understood what it meant.

I had a pay as you go flip phone around 2000. Then during my trauma years (02-09) I had no phone. I got a regular mobile phone in late 2009.

Did you play with other kids at school when you were age 7 -10 ish?

I would say "not really." The kids at school didn't like me; and I didn't like them much, either. I was usually trying to show off how smart I was.

I did play with my best friend at home, though....and reluctantly with some other kids who my best friend hung out with.

Same question.

Not really, either. I was married to Elton and living in my dream world. I spent break times at school sitting alone playing with caterpillars. I remember playing Horsey with some girls, but just once. I liked to stay inside with my teachers and read, if I was allowed. Sometimes I was chosen to clean the chalkboard brushes. That was really fun.

Did you feel sad, or just "detached" as a child?

Detached usually or angry
but intensely sad at school
Happy in my own little world or goofy times with brothers (not to dismiss the gd times but the sad times were longer )

I was usually pretty unhappy as a child.

The teachers didn't like me much. And I couldn't blame them. I made it pretty hard for them.

I was bad at sports. But I was competitive. Bad combination. Lots of temper tantrums when I lost in sports.

I wasn't a bad kid. I just wanted everyone to know how smart I was.

Detached. I remember consciously thinking that I was just an omnipresent brain, free-floating and observing the world without being attached to my body.

I didn't get really sad or aware of my challenges (as yet unnamed) until I hit puberty and all the other girls diverged into cliques. I couldn't keep up with them socially and that was upsetting. My loneliness was more obvious at that stage because the girls moved in gangs.

Did you stim in public as a child?

I did and my family felt embarrassed whenever I did so. I don't blame my family for feeling bad.

Same question.

Interestingly, I don't remember stimming at all as a child. I'm guessing that behavior was sort of forcefully "gotten rid of" through unknown means.

Same question.

I don’t know whether i did in public

The one stim i did , i began doing in private,
after my mom saw me n told me it was bad
N then later my dad saw n also told me not to do it or do it alone not in fromt of ppl as they wd misunderstand

However i once disobeyed her by showing my cousins n telling them to do it too (i thought it wd be useful fr them as it was fr me to calm doen n be in my own zone)

I took my "main" stimmy to school after age seven and hid it in my pocket. I still have it and it's on my lap right now. I was also ridiculed for some of my stims such as wanting to take off my shoes and hold my toes (in socks) when I was reading, or for sitting in twisty shapes which I still do. The worst teasing was at camp because I do some stims in my sleep too.

Yes, especially since my stroke. But before that I remember feeling off balance a lot in my life. I generally careen into walls when I round the corner in corridors. lol.

Knock on wood LOL....I don't feel dizzy too often. I get carsick, though. And I can barely play with my phone on the bus.

Ever heard the song "Dizzy" by Tommy Roe?
