I liked the first 3-4 episodes when it was about diverse weird stuff (monster of the week, I guess), but the last seasons were a drag, when it was nothing but that alien stuff storyline. I kept hoping it would return to its glory days, but the ca last half of the series was just plain boring.
I usually like series better when they do the introduction/regular episodes rather the later focus on the big bad. That held true in X-Files, Buffy, Xena, B5, and Harry Potter movies/books

Best TV series ever made. The thing to remember about the X Files is that it was, in a certain sense, two different shows; the "monster of the week" episodes on the one hand, which you seem to prefer, and the conspiracy episodes on the other hand, which make up about twenty percent of the total number of episodes (202 in the original nine series, I think). It was structured this way for all nine original series, not just the first. I admit that series eight and nine, after David Duchovny left, were a huge disappointment though.
