I have a friend in her sixties who went to the same university as me - and still recalls having used something like a computer to browse the stock of its library. She runs my favourite bookstore.

How often do you order takeaways?

Lately, two or three times a week. I've just had a mushroom curry with fried rice from the local Chinese.

Have you ever seen Kenneth Clarke's Civilisation?

No. I don't really watch TV.

Have you ever tried playing a flute?

The closest I've come is a recorder, which I hated and was terrible at. I can remember being asked to play a simple piece on it when I was around six years old, and just making things up. I couldn't concentrate after the teacher had put it in her own mouth to correct something. Meanwhile, my sister was downstairs taking a piano lesson, on which instrument she'd already have achieved distinction at God-knows-what grade.

Have you ever been a smoker?

I hate to say that yes, I smoked for a month or two when I was 13. I was trying to be cool to fit in with the cool kids.
I couldn't even inhale. I got so sick and dizzy I almost threw up.

Never again.

Have you ever cursed at your parents?

If you just mean arguing aggressively, then yes. If you mean swearing/obscenities, then no.

Have you ever travelled on a bus or train without buying a ticket?

Unfortunately, yes. I was a nasty, uncontrollable, wayward child. I took advantage of my mother's innocence and unconditional love no end; my father would never have let me get away with verbal abuse, though - it would quite rightly have been a nasty smack, even as a teenager.

I've travelled by train without paying, usually by accident. I've never travelled by bus without paying; it's hardly possible, given that one's ticket is checked before admission in this country.

Have you ever been swimming in the sea?

I travelled on a train without a ticket when they implemented a new system which I didn't understand. I got caught without knowing I'd done anything wrong.

Yes I've been swimming in the sea.

Have you ever stopped speaking to your parent(s) because of an argument?

Never for any longer than a few hours.

Have you ever walked - or climbed - up a mountain?

I went to the summit of Mount Vesuvius by bus, but it left without me on the return journey, so I walked all the way down.

Can you haggle about a price with a trader?

A passage in William Cobbett's Advice to Young Men (1829) has always stuck with me:

Quote:

Nothing is much more discreditable than what is called hard dealing. They say of the Turks, that they know nothing of two prices for the same article; and that to ask an abatement of the lowest shopkeeper is to insult him. It would be well if Christians imitated Mahometans in this respect. To ask one price and take another, or to offer one price and give another, besides the loss of time that it occasions, is highly dishonourable to the parties, and especially when pushed to the extent of solemn protestations. It is, in fact, a species of lying; and it answers no one advantageous purpose to either buyer or seller. I hope that every young man who reads this, will start in life with a resolution never to higgle and lie in dealings. There is this circumstance in favour of the bookseller's business: every book has its fixed price, and no one ever asks an abatement. If it were thus in all other trades, how much time would be saved, and how much immorality prevented!

Yes, I think they're handsome if not a little pompous.

Are you a fan of ladies' gloves? (on ladies)

Oh yes! Though again, the art of wearing them is a lost one.

Two button, three button or double-breasted blazers?

People used to wear cravat-like things in the 1960s----with their Nehru jackets.

Do you like "the New Look" in fashion (1940s/1950s. You saw lots of that kind of fashion on sitcoms like "Father Knows Best).

It's better than anything that's been in fashion in my lifetime (not difficult), but I still prefer a more modest style.

What's your favourite style of hat? (NO CAPS!!)
