Maybe people say so little to me because there's no telling how to phrase it. How might you respond outside the text box?

I use lavender on my pillowcase to help me sleep.

I'd be worse face to face unless you really pushed me for answers. You don't get the real me here , it's almost like an internet mask. I have a mask IRL which I'm trying to ditch but here it's a mask of me trying my best to be social , trying to make people laugh and hiding the darkness  .

I suppose I'm doing much the same. I think a chunk of the mask stuck to me involves a need to make people laugh at some point, or I think I'm not living up to my capacity.

From what I've seen, everyone uses a mask.
I had an NT describe going to work as her acting role and she had to get into character for it.

Speaking of masks I think my "mask" is looking and behaving more innocent than I really am. I may be naive and somewhat child-like but I'm really not as innocent as people think I am.

Not that I'm a bad person. But I can be naughty.

That's exactly what my GF said although she called it persona , a work persona , a friend persona , a family persona etc

My problem was it was the same mask for everything

I'm pretty sure I evolved to do mind altering things & report on my visions subjectively. Instead I must alter my mind in order to perfect logic & do so objectively.

I have a complicated mask, that's for sure. I've been wearing one for most of my life.

My stroke literally destroyed the part of my brain that was able to mask IRL. It just vanished. Apparently damage to the cerebellum in utero or cerebellar difference is one theory about autism. The cerebellum is responsible for fine-tuning all the higher order responses in our personality. I can mask to an extent online but in real life I can't, or certainly not like before.

Does that take any pressure off you , or is it just different pressure?

All this masking is tiring  I've gotta go to bed. Night Night , don't let the bed bugs bite.

I have a spooky mask in many regards but behind it I'm basically a woozy kitten.

I could post academic, peer-reviewed medical studies but this is a quick read you may find interesting.
Cerebellums aren't just for balance any more!

CEREBELLUMS

Re: Ferris -- I didn't know I was autistic when I had my stroke. My personality and mood changed quite a bit and everyone (family, doctors) said that it was depression which is common after a stroke. I became introspective enough to discern the difference and to note exactly what was missing (the mask). I'd love to say it's been liberating but it has alienated me from people including one really good friend (Dee) and my mother in particular. Mutism hasn't helped.

Thanks TW1ZTY. I hope your family friend is continuing to recover.

Pathetic that this article only discusses boys.
I was definitely autistic prior to my stroke (from birth) but the stroke ripped off my mask.

And my mom's friend is fine now and out of the hospital. He has to make changes to his eating habits and quit smoking though. He's only a few years older than me and had a heart attack I think that's pretty scary. :(
