As a child yes. There was an outdoor public pool near my house, and we also had our own family swimming pool. On the occasions that I had a group of little girls who wanted to come for summer swimming fun at my house, I was told I wasn't allowed because it would be too noisy and the girls would need to go in our house for changing their clothes, wanting a snack, etc. Therefore, I would go to the public pool with them to enjoy time together. My father got upset about me going to the public pool because it cost money and "we have our own pool". Catch 22. It was a lose-lose.

I do have fond memories of the outdoor, public pool though. I really liked the chlorine smell and the wooden suntan deck which smelled like pine.

What a beautiful picture, Prometheus.

My maternal grandfather was also an accomplished swimmer, like yours. He won many awards, but that was before I was born and he lived in the United States so I seldom saw him swim.

Have you gone ice skating outdoors?

My family isn't glamorous enough to consist of any Americans, or any foreigners at all, though I'm of Cornish descent through my mother's side

The painting is the most powerful attempt to convey a truly feminine, selfless sort of compassion now absent from the world - ever produced. It's the only painting that consistently evinces tears from me.

Never been ice skating at all. I'd like to try it, but not with other people around.

Have you ever tried sky-diving?

My maternal grandparents moved to California in the 1950s when my mother was a teen. My grandfather worked for Boeing Aerospace as an Engineer and my grandmother was a fashion model who wanted to be a movie star. She didn't get into movies but she did have beautiful clothes and she was a very elegant woman.

I have never tried sky diving, nor would I. I'm not afraid of the concept but I wouldn't want to bereave my family.

same question

I think I would skydive. They have the wind tunnel "simulator" nearby that I would try first. I've been bungee jumping and enjoyed it.

Same question.

Actually, our family did have some links to Nova Scotia in what's now Canada in the nineteenth century, I think.

I'd LOVE to try skydiving. Anything to do with flight; it was my boyhood dream to become a civil airline pilot. Travelling by aircraft still gives me a thrill unlike any other experience. Just the sound of a jet engine firing up after taxiing and *whoosh* - you're into motion and the ground disappears shortly after. There's nothing better than turbulence, either - I'm in seventh heaven.

Are you familiar with the music of Paul Hindemith?

Yes. I've been to a recital of works of his. That was many years ago.

Did you listen to "Peter and the Wolf" (Prokofiev) as a child?

I was obsessed with Prokofiev and Peter and the Wolf about ten years ago, for a period of time.

Have you ever played a violin or viola?

Hindemith's Mathis der Maler is one of the most moving pieces of music I know, especially Grablegung:

I can just about play a Bach minuet on the violin. I still own my old violin, though not a bow for it

List all of the instruments you've ever played/learned.

Tambourine: I was obsessed as a little girl, but with no skill ... I just liked the sound
Recorder: I remember playing Beethoven's Ode to Joy in the bathtub :P (much to my parents' chagrin, I'm sure)
Organ: I took lessons when my grandmother died and we got her organ, but I don't remember anything
Clarinet: I learned for a few months, but I don't remember anything

I don't know music theory at all, or how to read music.

same question

Recorder, guitar, piano and violin - none at all well. It was ONLY theory that interested me, LOL.

The only Prokofiev I know is his third piano concerto. The third and last movement is always what I assumed the secret piano concerto of the composer from Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged would sound like. One of the best novels written since the second world war, though I almost completely disapprove of the philosophy.

What Ayn Rand have you read?

In a store? In one place?

Does Sotheby's count?

I was naughty and changed the question to one about Miss Rand (actually Mrs. Ayn Rand O'Connor, née Alyssa Rosenbaum). It originally read "If you had a million pounds to spend in a store of your choice, what store would it be?". I suppose my answer would be Gieves and Hawkes on Savile Row.

I'll ask the Ayn Rand thing again.

I've read excerpts from The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, but they didn't interest me.

I lost everything once, by trusting someone and being exploited.

What shape of pasta noodles do you prefer?
