It's difficult because words often fail with some of these incredible pictures. I've seen the Arnolfini Portrait for real, along with other van Eyck works; you just get rooted to the spot and drawn into them.
They glow with their own light.

This is exceptionally good too, and a favourite:
Supper at Emmaus, by Caravaggio. (also at the National Gallery in London)
