I like John Paul II, too. He was a secular professor as well as a religious leader. He also helped people hide from the Nazis in Poland. He was also looked at with suspicion by the Nazis. He had to be VERY smart at times......

Benedict was a member of the "conservative" wing. He didn't do too much harm, really----except keep sexual abuse accusations under the rug.

Benedict XVI for his conservatism - in particular, his work in repopularising the Extraordinary Form/ Tridentine Latin Mass.

John Paul II was better than Francis, but didn't do enough to fight the schismatics in Germany. Ironically, it's Francis who has recently taken action here, though he needs to start defrocking some of the bishops over there if they don't start to listen.

I do like Francis, and I'm glad he's made clear his adherence to orthodoxy on the various fashionable issues of today.

Do you like Formula 1?

I have no interest in cars or racing. My father and brother took me to a car race once and I nearly passed out from the loud noise and all the crowds. I must say though, I buy my brother a Formula 1 wall calendar every year as part of his Christmas gift. It's a tradition I started years ago. That's the only way I know that "Formula 1" means the long pointy cars. lol

Are you following Wimbledon?

Ask Istomin that question :D

I used to be into the Indianapolis 500, and I knew many of the drivers from the 60s and 70s.

I didn't even know Wimbledon was happening. Don't forget I live in a bubble.

Nope. I don't own a television because I refuse to fund the BBC (Cultural Commissariat) - in the UK, you have to pay a fee to be permitted to watch television, part of which funds the BBC.

Do you like cricket?

I've never played it but I'm not opposed to it.

What's the first book you remember reading that made a big impact on you?

I remember reading "The Frail Ocean" when I was about 9-10 years old. Its environmentalist theme had a big impact (though I'm not really an environmentalist LOL).

"Anything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex....but Were Afraid to Ask"---Age 11.

"Dibs, in Search of Self"--around 11-12 years old

"Death of a Salesman" (a play) made a big impact on me in 9th grade.

The first book I remember reading was called The Biggest Bear (Lynd Ward). It had a yellowed, plastic dust jacket and it smelled divine. My brother taught me to read with that book.

The next one I would choose is Blubber by Judy Blume, then Are You There God, It's Me Margaret.

The first book I remember reading on my own was "Green Eggs and Ham." What I remember was that I hated eggs and I hated ham at the time when I read it. I was 5 1/2 years old, and had recently lost my first tooth.

I don't remember the name of the first book I've read but the first that made an impact on me was the Petit Larousse my dad bought for me. I must have been 7 or 8 because that's when I learnt to read in French.

Yes, I'm following Wimbledon. I was happy to see that Federer, Nadal, Nishikori and Tipsarevic won their first round matches, but disappointed to see that Istomin lost his. Cameron Norrie is a decent player, though.

As for the first book I read, I imagine it was something about cats. My favorite story as a little girl was about a Siamese cat. It was in German.

Same q. re. first book

Pretty much all the books of my childhood had big impacts on me. I still have most of them.

Have you ever picked a random thing to learn each day?

I have started to learn many languages a bit every day, but I failed to follow through with all of them.
