L is length. Maybe you could try practicing using the g values for the planets and the moon. Dimensional analysis will help for most problems (torque-related problems being notable exceptions) because analysis of the formula reveals that it is sqrt(m/(m/s^2)), which simplifies to sqrt(s^2), which simplifies to s, seconds.
