Cars that use GPS to know what the speed limit is and can't go faster than that.

Yes it's hypothetically feasible and anyone who seeks to implement it deserves to have fire ants erupt from every orifice and immediately start biting and stinging them, especially on their tender bits.

Think of how long it would take to pass a car going 5 under the speed limit if you can only possibly for 5 km/h faster. That's not improving safety, that's actively seeking to make passing more dangerous.

That makes sense. There could be improvements like only being able to speed up for a certain amount of time, or something like that. Even setting something like no more than 15km/h over the limit could work. At least around here many people go a lot faster than that and there's never a cop anywhere.
I think it's the kind of bad idea that would be better improved than discarded.

I'm anti-nanny gadgets in cars, personally. It's the sort of device most people would remove or otherwise defeat, which means it adds cost and accomplishes nothing.

I feel no amount of effort would be too much to expend to remove any politicians who would attempt to mandate such devices, even if they're good on other issues. Pretty much anything that makes cars closer to being trains but worse (like self-driving technology, nanny gadgets, etc), I'm against.

I'm curious about your statement about self-driving technology. I completely understand being instinctively cautious and I certainly would never get in one in this decade, but there will be a time when they're statistically much safer than human drivers. Especially having all SDCs on the road would allow them to collaborate and nearly avoid crashes altogether (but this is far in the future of course). The only difficulty is that people have to give up the illusion of control (which I assume is why you compared them to trains?) which many people don't want to do. It's the same as with planes, where you don't feel in control but it's statistically safer. I'm not fully endorsing the technology but I try to have an open mind about it. I just wish someone other than Elon Musk could be working on it.

Even better, don't make cars into trains. Just f**king use trains. Europe does, along with other superior things, and that's why I want to move there someday.
Edit: I hope this doesn't come across as argumentative. I'm just curious about your views on this topic.

I 100% agree with you about just f*****g use trains.

I don't want SDCs on roads at all, ever and banning proper cars and motorcycles in order to let SDCs take over the infrastructure seems like it just turns the roads into a less efficient version of rail. It doesn't seem like it would actually represent an improvement compared to just making trains a more viable option.

Driving is a worthwhile skill and an enjoyable activity. I notice you mention planes from the perspective of a passenger rather than the perspective of a pilot. I view driving from the perspective of the pilot, not just a passenger. Eliminating that enjoyable activity is not something I can support. Having good alternatives to make driving less often a option isn't a threat to whether or not people have the choice to drive their own car, but switching from proper cars to SDCs almost certainly would.

I don't mind if cars become more of a recreational device and less of an appliance. Ideally a mindset change would occur where the driving experience becomes supreme rather than isolating and distracting one's self from the experience, which seems to be what current cars focus on.

Alright, I think that's fair. I hate driving so I'd take any alternative option, whether it's SDCs (when they are statistically safe) or trains. But I can see if you like driving how it would be important to keep it around. I'm also probably biased towards cars that are incapable of breaking laws, because where I live there are never police anywhere, so people get away with driving like maniacs. But the better solution is to just enforce the laws better.

Euclidean zoning.

It is the reason why you have to drive to just about everywhere in North America. Like for example if you want to go to an art supply store or a cake shop you have to drive 5 miles (or 8 km) instead of walking 5 blocks in a walkable city.
