eventually some kinda automatic tranny will prevail due to emissions regulations, much harder to have uniform emissions output with different drivers shifting every which way.

People giving out home-made treats on Halloween. When I was a kid my mom would make candied apples and some of my neighbors gave us bags of fudge. I read that years before that they'd also give out home-made cookies and cake. But now because of all the horror stories about sickos putting razor blades in apples or poisoning Halloween candy people usually just give out store-bought stuff now.

Actually, there have been very few cases of actual trick-or-treat candy poisoning, and most of the victims were actually poisoned by their own parents. :(
And other kids have sometimes gotten sick after eating the candy, but it's a well-known fact that eating too much of it can do that, especially when it's combined with excitement. The whole "stranger danger" thing back in the 80's was ridiculous.

Halloween was the best holiday ever, homemade treats in my neighborhood also.As soon as it was dark we swarmed out ready for the big night. Some kids would bust the jack o lanterns in the streets, some egging, shaving cream and tp'ing, but no real damage, and nobody worried about getting abducted by a stranger. Some neighbor's would dress up and jump out of the bushes in costume delighting and scaring the pee out of us.There would be parties with bobbing for apples and all sorts of fun.Kids today have a raw deal.Their parents take them to the mall,or trick or treat in daylight, sometimes not even on the right day.All the fun is gone from the holiday. It was my favorite,I never remember it raining on that day.Nothing but happy memories.

I really enjoyed going out trick-or-treating at night WITHOUT PARENTS!! !

That's the thing which lessens the enjoyment--the presence of the parents (even though, alas, their presence is needed these days).

There was talk of razor blades in candy even back in the 1970s.

I wanted to be a truck driver when I was 15 because I wanted to try to pick up girls on the CB radio.

I wish I would have gotten involved in it. But--if I ever asked for a CB radio or a ham radio or something, my mother and her boyfriend would have thrown a fit!

Also: my mechanical knowledge was too nil to have been a successful ham radio person.

I really got into the CB/truck stop thing, though. I would think about meeting nice, worldly girls at truck stops. Girls who were passing through on their way to somewhere---but who wanted a little break with a guy like me.

That's why I WANTED a CB. I wanted to talk to a girl on the road via CB, then meet her at a truck stop. Then we'd just "rap" for a long time, and really get into each other.

The good thing was: there was no commitment. She had a place to go to, and so did I.

I would still want her in my life, though. For some more good times on the road!

Yep...

Nowadays, people are just too darn paranoid! LOL

Unfortunately, this paranoia has a basis in fact.

The Scanimate! scanimate.zfx.com (although the site is currently down).

You old uns may not recognise the name, but this analogue device generated most of the computer graphics seen on television during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The younger generation are spoiled, I tell you.
