Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the diesel engine, first tried coal dust as a replacement for gasoline. The experimental engine exploded and almost killed him. That was when he switched to using a light oil instead. Diesel fuel is oil, and in cool weather, you can actually put out a lit cigarette but poking it into a container of diesel.
