an old 14.5 billion year old lie i read was that 2=1 using the "reasoning":

let a = b.

multiply by a:
a^2 = ab

subtract b^2:
a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2

factor:
(a - b)(a + b) = b(a - b)

divide by (a - b):
a + b = b

considering a = b:
b + b = b

so:
2b = b

divide by b:
2 = 1.
