i heard the words "maybe you should step up to the plate" tonight on TV, and i tried to calculate what the genesis of that saying (which i know the meaning of (it means accept responsibility)) was. i calculated that it was derived from the fact that criminals that were about to be hung had to step on to the trapdoor that was opened to let them fall to their demise. maybe that trapdoor was known as a "plate" in those days. i will try to find out whether i am right tomorrow because for now i do not care.

i think the phrase is a reference to baseball. one steps up to the 'home plate' to bat. a pitcher may not pitch the ball until one has stepped up to the plate (otherwise their pitches are invalid as they cannot be measured against the hitters capacity to hit). to step up to the plate is to present oneself as ready to receive the challenge in store.

I wish I had known the Czech word for "cone" before I went, even though it's on my avatar.

Hunting trip #..., fudge, I don't know.

Saw, two decent sized goannas (one of them twice) and one koala bear sticking its head out a hollow in a tree (checking me out; smart bear). O, and some meat ants thought I was a meal.

Property clear.
