FSO was the state run auto company. If my knowledge is correct, they got their start making a license built copy of the Soviet GAZ M20 Poebda (Victory) called the Warszawa (the GAZ M20 was also the basis for North Korea's first production car as well). Later, like other communist block countries, they built licensed copies of Fiat designs, notably the "Polski-Fiat" 125p and 127. The 125p would later go on to form the basis of the Polonez, a car made famous by the hateful vitriol spewed forth at it's expense by Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson.
As for other things I know about Poland, The Solidarity trade union, led by Lek Walesa, was instrumental in bringing communism to a close during the 1980's. It's also known as the place with the cheapest petrol prices in Europe. If memory serves, it was also home to numerous notable mathematicians, but their names escape me right now.
I'd also add in some of the history of World War II in the mix as well, notably the Katyn Massacre. This is not well known of in the US, but what happened is that the Soviets massacred Polish military officers, police, and intellectuals whom they were holding prisoner of war and then blamed the Germans. According to Wikipedia, about 22,000 Poles were murdered by the Soviets.
