Now I glue the back of the cab on and sand it down to fit. I also painted the window surrounds.

Shows an idea of the size of things. It is next to some partial scratchbuilt waggons I was making.

The steps were positioned to line up with the cab doors. I forgot to show this repositioning earlier.

How the chassis is attached to the body...
I drilled a hole in the shortened chassis (Note the extra lead weight).

Image

And I used a nut and bolt to hold them together.

Image

I also drilled a hole in the cab floor of the body. I also painted the underneath of the chassis.

A view from the cab side of the cab floor. Note the nut and bot.

Painting. As I have started to paint, the black paint around the windows is dry so I have made and glued in some windows. I made a mistake as I used superglue and my windows look a little misty. Natural for a damp day! I was told I should have used PVA with windows.

Image

Now at this stage it really does not matter if I make painting mistakes. As long as I don't get paint on the windows! My method of painting is by brush, and I paint one colour, then the next, then touch up the first colour and then touch up the next etc. Takes a while waiting for paint to dry, but it works. So little mistakes soon get covered.

I did spend out on a lovely metallic green but despite a long time trying to mix it, it was still watery and would require about 20 coats to paint it! There have been a few complaints about modern paints from that manufacture since they moved production to China after a takeover. They used to be good.
Well. Plan B. Paint my train blue! I have nice blue paint to use, so I made a start and experimented on its livery. The first coat is a bit stripy. It usually takes three coats of paint to get a nice even colour.

Image

I tries painting the whole ends yellow, but later decided to just have yellow bufferbeams as it suits the locomotive better. I much prefer freelance models, don't you? I invent my own colours.

Second coat... And I have changed to more blue instead of yellow.

Image

And the third coat of paint fresh from the Mountain Goat workshops... Standing next to my Locomotive number 1 "Ruthy".
And this is as far as I have got with thw diesel so far... More to follow in the future as I want to pint somw littlw men to go in thw cab and then make a roof for the cab, then comes buffer couplings...And then I make some nameplates and numberplates for him. I have decided my steam trains so far are all female and my diesels are male. :)

Not been up to doing anything with my trains as yet. Someone gave me two nice kits and parts to go with them... Not felt well enough or stress free enough to do anything with them yet. They are waiting.

Your last diesel locomotive was gorgeous.

Yes, looking forward to seeing any further work, once you're feeling up to it 8) .

My layout has been keeping me busy. Will place some photos onto photobucket soon, and share them here, soon.

Not sure if photobucket works? Many sites photobucket photos from the past come up as blanks with the word Photobucket on them.
There maybe other ways?

I have a plan I want to try out along with the kits I need to build or finish. The plan is to build little 4 or 6 wheel diesels from 00 gauge bogie diesels. It can be done in theory. It is finding the best ways to do it. These ways may be different from donor loco to donor loco. It is the theory that it can be done that I want to persue.

I've used a pulley system to utilize what space I have in my "hobby/sewing room", so when not sewing, making quilts, clothes etc, I can lower the train layout(which is my priority at the moment), and work on it. I've got the baseboard made, the layout down, though it's a long way from finished, as I'm hoping to do away with the layout mat, and create hand-made scenery, mountains, tunnels, paint the scenic backboards etc. I'm basing this layout in part on Llansteffan, Wales, where I stayed in November last year. Prettiest spot on earth, castle on hill, beach, church, terraced homes and stores etc. At the moment, I'm building bits and pieces like the terraced homes, a platform etc Love the creative aspect, and one of my kitties has discovered a love of trains all of a sudden ... he thinks he's directing traffic at the moment :) ...

Some of the nicest layouts have a careful balance between scenery and the railway. It is all too tempting to cover a layout in track... :D

A careful approach...

If space is tight consider train formations where one has narurally short trains like short 4 wheel coaches and small locomotives. Or if in a modern era, short railcars of one or two coach lengths... Sure we all love express trains. But express trains are usually long...Say ten or more bogie coaches long.. And trying to fit that on a little layout just doesn't work!

If the space is tight and one wants a good scenic approch, a single track line with the odd siding maybe a better plan. If using an oval of track, try shifting it so the track does not run parallel to the edge of the board... For example, stagger it so the oval is close to one side of the board at one end, but closer to the other side of the board at the other end if that makes sense.

If you do not have room to stagger the oval of track, use flexible track and apply gentle curves rather then dead straight track where the straight track normally goes. This will take the eye away from thinking "Trainset" and towrards thinking it looks like an actual place.

Consider taking a siding to disect the main line at a diamond crossing (90 degree line if in the USA.. UK diamond crossings were usually more relaxed angles) and run this siding right to the edge of the board. This gives the illusion that the railway line goes further... Gives the illusion of space. This line can have part of the top of the rails pinted in rust colour, as one does not want to have anything fly off the board. It should look like a dissused or little used line. If a dissused line, an old sleeper across the tracks should look the part and prevent stray stock from rolling off the board. Maybe best to have this siding electrically isolated just incase!

Lots of little eye decieving tricks like this can help provide the illusion of space... Like low relief buildings or using a smaller scale near the backscenes.... Carefully done, it should liik great!

Take your time and enjoy!! !
