That "toad/towed" confusion is endemic to all English (British, American, Australian, etc), and they have homonyms in every language (words that sound alike but have unrelated meanings).

However English does have an overabundance of slang, and American English even more so.

And it accumulates over time.

The other day I was driving through a pleasant leafy suburban neighborhood trying to find some location, and checking out the street names. One of the streets was "Mourning Wood Drive". Obviously they laid out that housing development a number of years ago. Before the expression "mourning wood" ( meaning "something a male person might wake up with" ) became current. It's getting so that every phrase coming out of your mouth could have some smutty alternative meaning!

Those are Amerind names. Like Mississippi, and Massachusettes.

Assetegue Island, Potomac River, Patuxant river, Anacostia River, and the Catoctin Mountains, are local place names here the Maryland/DC area from the local Indians.

Similarly Australia has a lot of Aboriginie names that sound like "billybong".

Is "Hama Hama" near "Walla Walla Washington"? And has either town ever been visited by Boutros Boutros Ghali? Or by the band Lisa Lisa?

hamma hamma or however it's spelled is about an hour's drive north of me on highway 101, the scenic drive of western washington. walla walla is on the opposite end of the state in the southeastern portion not far from the oregon border. the difference between the two places is stark. neither have been visited by BBG that i can tell. don't know about LL.

Walla must be drier and less green than Hama Hama. Wiki says it has a Mediterranean climate. Its near Kenniwick. Where they discovered Keeniwick Man (the skeleton of the stone age American Indian man who looked like Captain Picard on Star Trek II).

i had no idea he looked like that. :o washington state has many microclimates in it, which makes it a popular filming location for movies.
