I guess I can give Charles a chance. He might surprise me and become and excellent King.

Charles is now Queen. He still retains the title of Royal Pain In The Arse.

It is what it is and I can't change it.

The first change since I joined and likely the last.

It's by Philip Larkin, and written for the Silver Jubilee in 1977.
He was offered, but declined, the position of Poet Laureate in 1984, following the death of Sir John Betjeman.

It's exactly right. She was always there, unchanging.

Ex PM Gordon Brown said that he thinks King Charles will run a more Scandinavian monarchy- more informal, approachable and a smaller number of royal people doing public duties. That sounds good to me.

btw I agree with Cornflake. Liz Truss is not a good choice. The only thing I like about her is that at least she is presentable and not a badly dressed buffoon like Boris Johnson.

I bet Charles will look stunning with his crown.

So are the Windsor family line direct descendants of William the conquerer? Alfred the great?

I assumed the Windsor's English lineage was heavily diluted from the lineage of noble royal families of Germany and northern Europe?
For example Charles' father Phillip is Danish-German is he not?

The modern British Royal family is really the German Royal family. But all European royals (except for Monaco) are all interrelated. In fact...they all have about the same amount of inbreeding as that weird looking hillybilly kid who plays the banjo in "Deliverance".

The current dynasty hasnt ruled that long. But Britain as a unified monarchy has existed for like a 1000 years.

Every English monarch down to King Charles III is a direct descendant of William the Conqueror as well as Alfred the Great.

When William becomes king, the succession will have come full circle from William the Conqueror and he will become the Kwisatz Haderach.

The royal family, as well as some members of the public, are directly related to William the Conqueror, and probably Alfred the Great, but it's harder to find genuine records before the Norman Conquest. And thanks to Henry VIII, there are no bones of Alfred around anymore!

Descendants of William I include Alexander Armstrong, the TV presenter. Matthew Pinsent, the Olympic athlete.

Other royal descendants include Danny Dyer, actor, descendant of Edward III. Josh Widdecombe, comedian, descendant of Henry VIII.

It is generally thought that most native English (i.e. white, Anglo Saxon) people are descended from Edward III. This is because the Black Death decimated the population when he ruled, so the royal family had a greater chance of surviving. And, Edward III put it about a bit.

A historian has calculated this probability.

Interesting...so that means every English monarch is a descendant of William's grandfather, the viking Rollo Image

Yes, they must be. So many people in Britain have had their DNA tested now that it's certain most of us (native white) Brits are Anglo Saxon or Norse. Which is more or less the same thing anyway. Not as many Celts/Ancient Britons. Although they tend to be in pockets- Wales, Cornwall, Scotland- because the invaders pushed them north and westwards.

My DNA is:

Great Britain and Ireland 82% (4% of that is Scottish/Welsh)
Scandinavia 11%
South Europe 4%
South Asia 2%
Eastern Europe 1%

I'm a pretty typical native English person, I think we're all the same as above but in different %.

On other DNA sites I have more Irish/Scottish/Welsh %. And if you met me, you would say 'Celt' immediately. Extremely pale, freckly skin that burns immediately in the sun. Pale eyes but almost black hair.

It should be remembered that:

Prince Philip, husband of Elizabeth II was a GREEK prince

The first two Georges, in the 18th century, hardly spoke a word of English; they were of German descent.

The Stuarts were of Scottish derivation. Scotland and England were united under one ruler starting with James I of England, who was also James VI of Scotland.

One near relative of Queen Victoria was Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.

The family name (house) of the Windsors were only "Windsors" because of World War I, and the fact that the Germans were the UK's enemies. Previously, their official "last name" was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was German.

It's all pretty complex. In the 19th century, virtually every ruler in Europe was at least distantly related to each other. There was considerable "in-breeding."

Wasn't Victoria the great-grandmother of Nicolas II? I know he and George V were first cousins and bore a strong resemblance to one another.

Yes, they are all interrelated.

This is why numpties who moan about 'foreigners' and 'only allowing true British people to live here' are complete idiots! We are ALL foreigners and interrelated!
