So giving 7 billion people 7 billion dollars each is 7 billion times 7 billion, which is...4.9e+19 (I done it on an online calculator and copied and pasted the answer to here). I think the +19 bit means 19 zeros. I don't know what the "e" means but it looks like a large number.

Yes - that's almost what it means. The example was 1 Billion dollars for each of 7 Billion people.. not 7 Billion per person, but yes, along those lines.

The "e" is for Exponent. It's not how many zeros after.. it's how many more times the number gets multiplied by itself. So, the number, which is as large as will fit on the calculator screen, multiplied by 7,000,000,000, x 7B again, x 7B again 19 times over. It's a very large number. A BILLION times larger than the math shown in the meme that only results in $1 per person vs. $1B per person.

But the actual answer would be 7,000,000,000 people * 1,000,000,000 dollars each = 7e+18.

You maxed out your calculator and confused it.

Calculators are actually kinda bad for that kinda thing. Juggling long numbers.

Its actually easier to do it your head. If you can grasp the concept of "powers of ten".

What you're doing is simply taking seven billion and squaring it. Seven time ten to the power of seven squared.

So first...take that seven, forget about the nine zeros after. Pretend its just seven, and multiply it by itself. Seven times seven is 49. Then put that 49 aside in your pocket for a moment.

Now consider that long line of nine zeros (the billion part). The nine zeros just means "ten to the power of 9".

An example.

A hundred is ten to the power of two. So if you multiply a hundred times times a hundred all you have to do is tack two more zeros on to a hundred and get four zeros, and you have "ten thousand" (ten to the power of four). A 100 times 100 being ten thousand.

So if you multiply a billion by itsself you just tack another nine zeros to the end of the first set of nine zeros to get a string of 18 zeros.

NOW pull out that 49 and stick it in front of the 18 zeros, and you have 49,000,000,000,000,000,000 (49 million trilllion). Thats how much money you would need to give seven billion people each...their own pile of seven billion dollars. About a million times the wealth of Elon Mollusk.

How is it insulting though? Who uses math skills on a daily basis more than school kids? Who learns math skills on their own once they're done with school?

Between the first and the second lines of thought, wouldn't most adults math skills be comparable to some level of school kid?

Actually that IS rather depressing...that so many fall for it.

If I had a billion dollars could I give ...a billion people...a billion dollars each?

I would think that even a schoolchild we INSTANTLY see that I could only give each of them one buck. :(

Oh well.

Yeah but he's got 152 billion.

So he can give 152 people $1 billion each, the rest of us have to fight them for it.

:chin:

Before the 1950's that's the exact word that was used to label people on the autism spectrum.. so, it seems exactly that way I guess.

We're all just a bit different in how we're afflicted by it, with social aspects being the common thread. Some of us are particularly good at math, and others particularly bad at math, but we're all under the same r-word umbrella in the end.

Whether math or spelling, there are correct answers and incorrect answers. Best not to feel insulted and take it as a learning opportunity when someone corrects/teaches something - whether a calculation, spelling, correct use of grammar etc. IMO

People don't become billionaires by giving away even 1cent. Musk has specific ventures he sinks his money into that he considered contributing to humanity to make a better world. I'm not his biggest fan but I think its a waste of time demanding he cough up. Leave him be.

^ If he gave away just 1 cent, he would still be a billionaire.

I suppose it depends on what way one interprets it. I thought whoever said that was trying to say "if school kids understand it then grown ass adults should, if you don't then you should go back to school".
Math has never been something I've been good at. It's like I'm dyslexic when it comes to math.

Instead, Americans invented a concept called "the prosperity gospel," where they literally worship wealth.. sooo, yeah. :/

Your title says "can't".

"Can", "should" and "will" are all three different things

There is not enough information to determine "why"

There could be a lot of different reasons

It's a rhetorical question.
