They're putting up a good fight tonight. (I'm watching EURO 2012 now).

Great architecture, awesome writers, a nifty-sounding language- yep, the Czech Republic seems pretty awesome. :)

Prague and Budapest are my favourite European capitals, I don't think I could decide between the two.

Rome and Athens have lost most of any charm they once may have had, London, Amsterdam & Paris are turning into cesspits of humanity and Berlin/Warsaw just don't have much in the way of character probably due to having the crap blown out of them followed by brutalist communist architecture. Innsbruck & Zurich are pretty good (they get bonus points for beautiful mountains) but Prague & Budapest still win.

Ooops, forgot about Bruges. Says it all really doesn't it? :D

been to praha twice ('78 & '94) & it must be my favorite city out of the two or three dozen i've spent time in.
not being conversant with the language, i haven't gotten to know many people well. but i can say after reading a lot of literature in translation, what impresses me is that people there seem to have a tolerance & humor that is like the dutch although their history is much more tragic.

i'm curious, do you know angelo ripellino's book magic prague? is it well regarded by people who live there?

My knowledge of Czech consists entirely of that gained from three games against a Czech, that knowledge is this. Czechs are very good at chess

I was a acquainted with a Czech girl in my graduate program who I talked to occasionally. I only regret that I never got the chance to awe her with my vast Czech vocabulary (3 words). :D

I went to Prague once too (with family). For some reason there were Coca-Cola logos everywhere at the time (awnings, store windows, the tops of boats everywhere)....can anyone explain that?

I wonder how beer from Budweis (Budovice) compares to Budweiser? :chin:

Also, is the King of Beers a Habsburg? 8O

You've not had it?

Some of the Budvar lagers are quite nice. I'm not keen on their dark one though.
