It means they start going wrong.
Eg. "Everything was running smoothly until they hired that new manager - then things started going pear-shaped".

I remember a point, early in life, when I realized how to build walls out of overlapping lego blocks. Its on of my only memories of my very early years. Quite a happy memory and time. I wish things were as simple now as they were then.

Not really. The U.S. version that aired from 1983-89 and hosted by Jim Perry was the one I was talking about.
