The surgical ward room.

Light bouncing off everything.
Creases in crisp sheets.
Shadows of creases.
Shadow, shadow, vibrating light.
Chip in paint on door.
Light on the racks. It seems to pulsate.
Flecked splahback, shadow, light.
Shiny taps.
Close my eyes.
Shiny surface on poster. Blinding.
Shadow under bed leads to...
Glitter??
Glittery flecks in the linoleum.
Racks of gloves (stop looking - ordinary white wire does NOT pulsate)
Dr asking question.
Can't focus.
Because light, shadow, light and white.
How do I explain I can't think for gleaming surfaces?
My brain hurts.

Thoughts drift willfully to your side
questions swirl helplessly among my Visa bills,
beneath my headphones
which are hot yet silent.
If I could only be there
nattering the way I do
confirming every detail
bringing tea
and a squished muffin
from the foyer
minus the paper bag,
because I hate those things.
We'll have it at the Geisha
later on
and you'll say it went OK.
Is it the cute one?

It went ok.
The doctor was not my surgeon.
An Indian dr I couldn't understand.
But he has discharged me.
I survived.
