When i was a kid i ran into the kitchen and picked up a glass of what i thought was orange juice and started chugging it down. That turned out to be pure warm pork fat that had been drained out of a roasting tin.

How and when did you learn to swim?

At primary school.
Our school had a pool and we started learning from grade 1.

I learnt early because I spent so much time on boats, and then we got our inground swimming pool when I was four. It was mandatory that I learn to swim for safety reasons. I went to lessons in the private pool of my parents' friends. Their daughter Tammy was my teacher (she had a gold necklace that said Tammy, so I remember looking at it all the time because I didn't do eye contact). I loved going there because their backyard was beautiful and secluded, and backed onto the area where we went boating. I loved the sound of driving on gravel on their long private driveway. I loved the smell of their pool, and going home sat on a folded towel on hot vinyl leather seats in the car. I loved everything. We often stopped to get popsicles on the way home. I carried a pinwheel most of the time too. Swimming lessons are among my best childhood memories.
