I might be an atheist, but damned if I can't feel some kind of ecstasy in art inspired by God. Shift cancelled today and since I was in town I decided to go and sketch in the Cathedral (not the following ones, though I have seen these irl too).

Cathedrals were amazing works of architecture even without the art.

With the art, they became sublime creations.

The architecture is art all by itself, the height adds to the atmosphere inside.

Ours was built in the 11th century (with alterations since then of course), it's incredible.

It's incredible the time and effort needed to complete these cathedrals.

Most of the time, in those days, people felt like they were inspired by God, rather than solely by themselves or other corporeal beings.

I'm an atheist, by the way.

But I respect the potential power of religion.

Yes, I think it's remarkable how effectively that sense of divinity is captured.

The last image is from a Basilica in Bruges where you can touch a relic which is allegedly a vial of Christ's blood. Despite knowing the dubious history of such relics in Europe, it was an interesting experience seeing people there who did believe (and who had come half way around the world to see it). You can't help but fall silent in respect of a place like that, especially of the faith of those people to whom it represents a connection to God.

They make a great security system.
I know when anyone is near my house because they sound the alarm.

That was one of Chaucer's main topic of satire: the sale of "indulgences."

Yep...I walked into Westminster Abbey one time, and was so stunned by the majesty of it all that I felt almost faint.
