I love cats. Lost count of how many cats have "owned" me. It was a particularly sucky last week having to put down our "cool cat" of 15 years. What I mean about being a cool cat was nothing really fazed him. He would be curious, and not be scared. Liked to play, and was a total mush.

Something I put together to remember him by.

i would say i love cats, but the word love pales. i also love all animals, and stop to pat dogs wherever i go. i love horses, parrots, rabbits...
but cats are my favorite and the ones i want as pets, the ones i identify with.

Cats...the furry plague of my life. When my partner and I started to live on our own.

"No, we dont want our own cats. They are cute, but they are trouble when you want to go on holiday, they cost money we dont have yet, you need to care for them, they loose their hairs everywhere, they are unhygienic in bed..."

"Ok...but she (a savage farmcat) is only a guestcat. This is a good thing, because you still can go on holidays without problems, but every 2-3 days she comes for a small visit, get some food and have some hugs, which is really nice...but no more, no we dont want our own cat."

"Oh s**t, the guestcat is pregnant. For all sake, dont let her into the house again, so she dont get her babies at our place! We dont want catbabies!"

"Oh s**t, the guestcat got her babies under the stairs to our house entrance...ok...its as it is and we cant change it, so lets keep them for some weeks, and then find some owners for the catbabies and sterilize the mothercat and then everything will be normal again."

"Oh, but this one is so cute and loves us so much and sees us as additional parents, we cant give him away! Ok, so we will find good owners for the other two kittens, sterilize the mothercat, and keep the cute, dumb, helpless kitten that wants to be around us all day."

"Oh, but the mothercat is getting savage again and leaves all day, and then the little baby we want to keep, would be alone all day, because of us working. We have to keep another babycat to, so they have company."

Wanted no cat at all, and ended up with two housecats and a shy, halfwild guestcat. XD At least the third kitten we gave away, when it was old enough. But could have kept that as well, wouldnt have mattered anymore. XD

I have two cats. I adore them both.

My older calico cat is really affectionate with immediate members of the family, and she acts like she's high when she rubs herself on catnip.

My younger female Norwegian Forest Cat is kind of stupid, but lovable. She always rolls over to let you stroke her underside when you approach her, and yesterday she did it while sitting on the edge of a rather high concrete step...

Didn't like cats until after a disastrous dog adoption, I was persuaded to try a cat. Adopted two so they wouldn't get lonely if I wasn't there during the day (the dog trashed my place trying to get out & find me). It's been seven years and I love them! I adopted a third after fostering 3 kittens that had been found in a barn. One of them got so attached to me that I couldn't let him go.

I don't like cats (or any specific type of animal for that matter).

I like them. I have been living with multiple cats for almost a decade but never had one as a pet. Or be its slave. In the future I am thinking of getting a cat. I have been browsing the different breeds for temperament, adaptability, etc. and have been finding links that list reputable breeders. That may not have happened for quite awhile though.

Consider adopting a kitty rather than getting one from a breeder please? :) Unless you have your heart set on a particular breed there are lots of lovely kitties out there that need homes. The shelters are usually very good at telling you if the animal has any behavioural problems so if they say it is a nice and friendly kitty it almost always is. Never had a bad experience of adoption; one of my current cats Worf was adopted from a shelter and he is ridiculously sweet and affectionate. "Moggies" i.e. mongrel cats (the majority of what you will find at a shelter) are also often of better temperament and have fewer health problems than pure-bred cats.

I am not ruling out adopting from a shelter. My family has adopted several shelter cats or those that have been abandoned. However, they seem a bit more aloof than other cats I have met; they prefer to stay in the basement and are not interested in playing or receiving a lot of attention. My brother's cat however is different; he is more social who meows quite a bit at us and likes to spend his time with humans and will sometimes be a lap cat. Each cat has an unique personality and many are much more independent than others, but I have a feeling that being weaned off from their mother too early have made some of the family cats more timid then normal. One of our cats never learned to clean himself and fits the definition of being a "scaredy cat".

However, I do have mildly allergic to cats unfortunately. I do take Allegra for my multiple allergies including dust but it is not 100% effective. My attitude in the past has been to "deal with it" however I believe they are the main reason why I am often nasally congested. Two of my current sisters cats have stayed with us for around 10 days while she has been on vacation. It seems like my symptoms have been worse since their arrival.

If I am getting a cat in the future I would need a cat that can handle being an only cat and having some independence while being very affectionate. There are a few cat breeds that can live happily in my situation and some may be hypoallergenic for me which would decrease my allergy symptoms. I am really interested in the following cat breeds: Chartreux, Russian Blue, British Shorthair, and the Siberian. These breeds are generally very healthy as well. I am looking for a cat that was raised in a loving home with plenty of social interaction with its parents and human owners.

We have mother outdoor cats. Every spring they will go off on their own for a time, then return and park on the front step with a handful of kittens (squeals with delight). Right now, we've a longer-haired siamese baby, a charcoal colored one, and one that's completly black but for her little white toes. Sooooo cute! :D

I would also recommend checking out the local shelters. Plenty of well raised cats who came from, and need loving homes. Look at it this way they are already socialized, and set in their ways plus you get to see some of it first hand. Kittens from a breeder (or in general) you don't know what you are getting. Unless you really know what you are after, and doing a breeder kitten could just give you more trouble.

I have thought about adopting from a shelter and consider it another option; though due to circumstances like my cat allergies I may have more limited options. However, for the first cat I bring home I want it to be a kitten rather than an adult. Adults have their advantages such as more defined personality and not requiring as much attention as a kitten, but I want to experience first-hand the terror of raising a kitten by myself! I know it will be painful but I think it will be well worth it when the cat reaches a couple of years old. I know what I would be getting myself into since I have had family members raise kittens in the past.

Also, I do prefer getting a single cat rather than 2 whenever I get the opportunity to own a cat. Excluding higher food/litter costs, regular vet check up and surgery costs, I think I would do better raising one cat since I am not a very good multi-tasker. Do many shelters encourage or require adopters to adopt 2 or more cats? Many cats require a buddy at home but many others do fine as a single cat in the household.

Being a single cat in the household would require more independence while I am away from work etc. The breeds I have been looking into generally are known to not be needy and independent but are very affectionate. Plus, I like the look of silver-gray fur. :)

Believe it or not. I too am allergic to cats, and dogs. But at least with myself once I have them hanging around for a bit the allergies slowly go away. Whenever I meet a new animal I am usually sneezing, and whatnot for a couple of hours afterwards. A majority of shelters are happy with you adopting one animal. I can understand wanting a kitten. Kittens are awesome. LIttle furry balls of energy (and mischief) which again you can find many of them at a shelter. A piece of advice when it comes to adopting a kitten. Usually a shelter will have a kitten pen. Ask if you can go into the pen. Play with all the kittens. Pick them up all up. Get to know them. Eventually one (many two or more) will curl up with you. Those are the ones to take home. Good luck..
