Even when you feel like you can't - just take one more step.

Of course money doesn't. The stuff you buy with money makes you happy.

Yes, that is a good idea, if you don't meet your own needs then you die which is bad.

Utilitarian theory: maximise total pleasure, minimise total suffering.

The "total" bit is important, as individual benefit sometimes has to be sacrificed for the common good. Thus murderers are locked up, which doesn't do their individual pleasure many favours but greatly improves the balance for everyone else.

On a more local level, if you run for a bus or train and just miss it, don't get angry at the Driver. By leaving on time he has maximised total pleasure when you consider all of the passengers on board who want to get home on time. Your pleasure in getting on a delayed service is nothing in comparison.

It's all about taking responsibility for oneself and considering the bigger picture. Easy in theory but can be very complicated in reality! Has particular relevance with regard to environmental issues.

Interestingly, Wicca has a similar teaching which reads "Do as thou will but harm none".

I'm not really into that kinda stuff but I do think the rule is great - it says a lot in only a few words.

Consistency is the nightmare of little minds.
