Utilitarian theory: maximise total pleasure, minimise total suffering.
The "total" bit is important, as individual benefit sometimes has to be sacrificed for the common good. Thus murderers are locked up, which doesn't do their individual pleasure many favours but greatly improves the balance for everyone else.
On a more local level, if you run for a bus or train and just miss it, don't get angry at the Driver. By leaving on time he has maximised total pleasure when you consider all of the passengers on board who want to get home on time. Your pleasure in getting on a delayed service is nothing in comparison.
It's all about taking responsibility for oneself and considering the bigger picture. Easy in theory but can be very complicated in reality! Has particular relevance with regard to environmental issues.
