abacus, i agree with you in technicality. the idea that there is an entity which created the world, and or has an omnipotent presense within it, is ridiculous, and sad that anyone has to be plagued by such nonsense. It would be an unprecedented positive improvement if reason could replace religion.

but how effective do you think a militant attitude toward the religious is? let me also ask were you raised in a faith?

abacacus, not abacus... sorry, just a little pet peeve of mine >_<

A militant attitude towards the religious is every bit as effective as the general religious populations militancy towards atheists... Jehovahs knocking on my door (and informed they can leave immediately or I'll call the police), Catholics preaching their nonsense on the ruddy streets, Muslims declaring Jihad on the infidels...

I am what society has made me.

I was raised in an Anglican household, but it was never really shoved down my throat. My parents respect my lack of religion.

My Dad's a Mormon, as it so happens. I also have cousins on Mission trips at the moment.

I'm secular, myself.

I too was raised in an Anglican household, however Christianity was shoved down my throat at school. Morning services were compulsory and anyone who did not sing the hymns or say prayers aloud got a thrashing with the headmasters cane. I learned to despise Christianity. Thankfully corporal punishment is no longer allowed in UK schools.

I'm surprised there's only one Pagan in the survey.

And also intrigued about the non-Protestant non-Catholic non-Mormon Christians. What denomination are you all...?

I almost voted Pagan, but it doesn't quite fit me. I happen to believe all religions.

Also, there's non-denominational Christianity.

It's interesting, because over here most people tend to be either one of the Protestant denominations or Catholic. There are some people who go to 'Evangelical' churches, but I think they're in the minority still.

I suppose in the US there are lots more people from the Eastern churches too, Orthodox and so on. I tend to forget that this site is largely American.
I'm so racist.

Raised in a Catholic family, but was always daydreamed during mass/Sunday school because I was never interested. You can say apathetic. When I confirmed my notions I do not care and most likely never would and labeled myself an atheist, it was like I declared war on my parents as if I committed a grievous crime. My mother was the leader of Religious Education at the time, so she had an emotional investment in educating me, which must have been a slap to her face when I declared my honest feelings.

It is hard to move on, but time is slowly healing the wounds. Although their is no animosity between me and my parents, though when religion pops its head in conversations, arguments occasionally occur. I tend to keep to myself and not too many people know my feelings on the subject.

Atheism is not the lack of religion, Atheism not the lack of religion, atheism is not the lack of religion, ATHEISM IS NOT THE LACK OF RELIGION! Secularism is the lack of religion. There are secular theists and religious atheists. Now what have we learned today?

That Atheism is a religion despite the fact it is essentially the denial of religion? :p

ATHEISM IS NOT THE DENIAL OF RELIGION, IT'S NOT BELIEVING IN A GOD; RELIGION IS NOT DIRECTLY TIED TO THE WORD ATHEISM. Denial of religion would be religious skeptism or something. Not practicing a religion is secularism.

Missionary work. One's in DC, the other's somewhere in Europe I think.

By denying the existence of any god you essentially deny the basis of most religions.

What is Christianity without god? Islam without allah?

They are nothing. By denying the root of the religion you deny the religion itself.
